Thank you all! It’s going to get some miles on it. Here’s a photo of it when it raced in Peru. Luckily it still has the original engine. It’s hard to believe it lasted!

Congratulations!!!

Thank you all, it’s tough getting details of it’s racing history. I’ve been able to connect with three people familiar with the car when it raced in Peru. I’ve got several photos of it racing from 1969-1974. It raced in the Caminos del Inca which is a 1700-2000 mile race around Peru. It’s like the Mille Miglia in Italy. It won twice with Teodoro “El Zorro” Yangali driving.

Woodbridge. I bought the car from Virginia Beach. It's only been here for about two weeks. Where are you?

So, one thing I think I'd like to fix on the car is the rear end. I understand the current rear didn't come with the car. I'm still learning so bear with me. I understand this is a 1966 rear but not the correct one for a Shelby. Mine came originally with a detroit locker if that makes a difference. The story goes that when my car was imported back to the US with a 65 Shelby the rears were swapped when both were restored simultaneously. The 65 has a 66 rear as well but it currently has overriders on it. I have the original metal tag that came with my rear.
Could you please confirm this rear didn't come with my car?
Are the rear ends date coded?
Is there an external indication that the rear is a detroit locker?
-
Congratulations. Very nice car, I like the green!
-
2 parts to the rear. The center section with the locker. That is cast iron with a date code. It holds the locker and gears. The black housing itself that everything bolts to. Looks like you have a 65 style housing where the back is fully rounded. The 66 style has a bump out for the ring gear. My carryover has the 65 style I just took the locker out of it. I also have a 66 dark green #1127 under restoration. I can send you some pics. I live near Leesburg VA if you want to PM me.
-
If the Housing came out of a '65; I don't see the brackets for the over-ride traction bars.
-
Here are some pics to show the difference in the rear axle housing between 1965 & 1966.
Pics 1 & 2 are 1965 style.
Pics 3 & 4 are 1966 style.

Another picture of an early '66 non Detroit Locker with overrides.

Thanks Gents! I haven't looked at the rear closely since buying the car - I haven't checked on the top of the rear where the overriders should be. I wonder if they were ground off. The '65 that was restored at the same time has a '66 rear with overriders (I presume welded on). I'll take a closer look tomorrow and let you know what I find.
Where would I find the date code on the pumpkin?
-
Cool car and history. Glad to have you here!

Nice piece

You have gotten some good information on the styles of housings. There are instances of the '65 style being installed in '66 cars, but the cars are usually earlier production times than yours.
You and I have talked about the tag, but here it is for the others.

Pretty cool to see a Detroit Locker in a '66. It's pretty unusual.

You’re a class act Brant. Thank you for taking the time to educate me offline.
-
What about the 964 ?
-
What about the 964 ?
Supposedly the axle manufacturing plant...no specific data though.
Earlier tags have "SP" here. Of course, '66 models usually have "C6ZX" numbers too.
It's very unusual to have a factory installed Detroit Locker in a '66. 6S1066 has a pretty unique original tag to go along with that option!
-
It's been my experience the 'L' stands for limited slip, not Locker. While a limited slip will drag the outside wheel if having been parked for a while, they do not have the ratcheting experience of a Locker.

While that may be true, on the early GT350s, Detroit Lockers were offered and installed, rather than Traction Locks.

Congratulations! I think you will find the forum members are incredibly helpful with us newbies, I have s1604 for just anout three years.

Hey Brant, what does the "B" on the top-right of the tag stand for? I think I've seen tags with either A, B or C in that position.
Thanks,
Steve
-
Is it the shift A, B or C?
-
Hey, Lad, that's a good guess. Hopefully someone knowledgeable will chime in & confirm or refute that for us.
In the mean time, do you know if the factory Locker in your 6S373 is the "loud" or "quiet" type?
Steve

Thanks,I think I read it on forum 1.0
I think there is nothing too quiet about the locker. It’s been rebuilt as it was pretty bad when I got then car about 10 years ago, ie wheels locked, leaked and very noisy, bit more usable since but hasnt been driven under her own power (engine being rebuilt!
) yet so not tested
-
Congratulations.... green is a power color !!!

I’m going to cars and coffee in Great Falls, VA tomorrow if anyone is in town.

Nice stop in Clifton, VA(http://)

Picture in post #53 is very cool 😎

Saw that car at a show in Lakeland, FL a couple of years ago. It appeared to have been recently restored and presented beautifully. Previously, I had seen the same car when it was a 4-speed white/blue stripe car back in 2010. Congratulations, you have a very nice looking car - enjoy it!
-
Sharp GT350 in green. I get so many compliments on my Ivy Green Mustang and I'm sure you will, too. Beautiful car!
