Title: Notre Dame Cathedral
Post by: deathsled on April 28, 2019, 08:57:00 PM
Hello Gentlemen:

I just finished writing a recording a piece I wrote in dedication to the Notre Dame Cathedral fire.  Thought I would preview it here for the first time.  Feel free to have a listen at your leisure.  Writing music is so much more satisfying than practicing law.  But we all have to make a living, right?  Written and performed on my Steinway B Crown Jewel.

Best wishes to the people of France and Europe.

I've climbed to the top of Notre Dame 2-3 times...
It's right on the Seine and is truly a magnificent work of art.

Thank you for the video...

As a little kid growing up I thought the gargoyles were so cool...

I was able to actually get close to one last summer....

In the US all you can get insurance wise for liability is $1 million. You'd have to get Lloyds of London to write an additional rider. They used to charge 15% of what you wanted as the premium.

I'll bet you that contractor was under-insured? From the look of it, it's WAY over $50million. Depends of the specs of what the Church and French Government would want. I can't see them permitting it rebuilt with wood.

Plus, it probably was built by a French ship builder contractor to begin with. The timbers and fasteners all are of that type of construction.

I don't see where anyone is going to want to do the job but first a plan needs to be approved. I personally think only portions of the stonework will be allowed to remain.

I would envision something like the USS Arizona memorial at Pearl as the final product. There is going to be lots of arguing and debate over this and probably will take 10 years before the plan is finalized?

I always found Gothic as morose. I don't know why Demons need to be part of a Christian church but might have been part of the fear of witches at the time? I do believe that Rosslyn Chapel is similar and of approximately the same time period?

I'm an Architect and a Contractor. Someone would have to be stuffing tens of millions of dollars at a time in barrels to take that on. No matter what you do, you are going to take major flack from very vocal public groups. I don't think it is worth it.

When George Steinbrenner was the owner of the Yankees, he finagled a deal with NYC that the old Yankee Stadium would be re-built for whatever it cost and the Contractor was GUARANTEED a 10% profit above and beyond that.

The reason being, no one really knew how to project a cost on the project.

Someone with a HUGE ego and feeling of self importance is going to be the one and there are very few qualified at that level in my opinion? Who knows? We'll see. Whatever the end result it will be controversial at best? Best of luck to them.

It's a shame but proof that nothing lasts forever. It had a good long run.

They'll spend a $billion if not $billions rebuilding.

Ironically, they struggled to raise enough funds to do the minor rehab that was under way.

The Catholic Church should pay for much of it.  What's even more disturbing is the fact that there is a good chance this was arson. The upheaval this would cause if it was is what is being avoided.
I have been there twice. It is a magnificent time capsule and I am disgusted at the loss of something that has stood the ages.

"The Catholic Church should pay for much of it." ??

Ownership of the cathedral was seized from the Catholics by the state, initially in the French revolution and re-codified in French law again over a 100 yrs ago.
Maybe the owners should pay?

It may be owned by the French, but it is a Catholic church.  The Vatican should offer up restoration funds as well. We won't get into my disposition on the Catholic church and the socialist pope.

Very good ! Hoping you will be able to play it directly from the organ of Notre-Dame....which has been saved.

Thanks to the firemen, many things, objects, paintings and sculptures were saved.
There would be a lot of debate on the rebuilding obviously. And there are many know-how and expertise in France and around the world to do it properly whatever the option would be.

Wow!  I was off of the site a couple of days and the responses were numerous.  Thank you all!  I plan to write more music and do a re-recording of my Seven Liter Cobra piece.  I need better recording equipment.  I'm a one man band here.  Doing everything myself.  I'll look into a boom for the microphone and so on.  Thank you!

As an aside, I am leaning toward arson because how is it conceivable that no one took precautions on a world renowned structure so important to so many?  If it was an accident it was a big oopsie which to me is inconceivable.  But I've been told, don't confuse incompetence with malice.  But hey Notre Dame survived two world wars!  Even the Nazis didn't touch it.  Anyway, enough of my rant.

As an addendum, I was able to find a news outlet video of a suspicious person walking around during the fire.  Youtube has blocked this video from being forwarded when it originally came out.  This site captured the video accessible here.  Some claim it was a fire fighter.  I took the liberty of looking up the Parisian firefighter uniform and it looks nothing like what this guy is wearing...  None are discussing this in the mainstream media.

I've been there twice and lines were too long for me to stand there to look at another Cathederal. Oh well I'll wait for the new and improved version next time.
