Title: 67 Shelby 6A black interior trim ‘smooth seats’ – Who’s Got ‘Em?
Post by: Richstang on May 09, 2019, 08:05:58 PM
The post build Ford records show approximately ~340 cars left San Jose with the 6A 'smooth' black vinyl trim. That's ~10.6% of production. These can be split into two groups, as early builds, or as late builds. We believe the first ~228 cars ordered, on DSOs 2501-2527, received the 6A trim. These are the early builds.

For the remaining ~113 cars, the late builds, it's not so simple to define. It appears a materials shortage affected these cars. That shortage looks to have happened over multiple days starting in early June.

The only way to know for certain if you have one of these cars with 6A trim is to obtain a Deluxe Marti Report.
Information on obtaining a Marti Report can be found through this link; http://bit.ly/2t7I4bH

Here's how you can HELP:
If you happen to have one of these rare 6A-trimmed 1967 Shelby's (documented by a Deluxe Marti report), please reply to this thread (or PM me) with the following details from your car's Marti Report:
-The Shelby sequence number (last 4 digits)
-The Ford Trim code (6A, 5A, or 5U)
-The DSO number
-The DSO Item Number

We currently estimate these later-built cars with 6A trim (due to the 5A materials shortage) began while the DSO 89-2608 group of cars was being built. This was roughly after VIN #2800 and continued through to the end of San Jose production. With your help, we'll be able to pinpoint exactly what days(s) the assembly line ran out of material, when they were re-supplied, and the exact quantity of cars that were built with 6A trim by paint color. Thanks in advance for your help!

Additional details and theories can be found at the "1967 Shelby Research Group" in this link: http://bit.ly/67Shelby6Atrim

There was a discussion on SAAC forum 1.0 noting the earlier 6A 'smooth' trim differed from the later 6A 'smooth' trim. A few of us have tried to determine exactly what those differences were, but we have not been able to spot what exactly they are. If anyone can elaborate on those details, please let us know. I'm sure it would be appreciated by everyone interested in these 6A trimmed cars.

While I no longer have the car ( sold it Orlando Mustang in 1988), GT 500 #1865 had smooth seats. Of course, I was not the original owner.

I don't have a Marti for mine yet but my seats are original and they are smooth.  #3119.
Here is a picture of #10 also with original interior.

I really appreciate the reply! Everything is helpful to sort this out

#1865 does not look good as an original 6A 'smooth' trim car. It was built at San Jose on 4/13/67 several months after the early built cars and almost two months before the later built cars with 6A trim. We are lucky to have found the Marti Report for this car. It notes 5A 'comfortweave trim. Others Marti Reports from that same date (on, before, and after) also show 5A trim. It looks like #1865 may have either been replaced with the wrong material or had the seats swapped from another car. I will add your note to our data file to track it. Thank You!

6972boss,
#3119 is a solid candidate for the 6A 'smooth' trim. It was built at San Jose on 6/30/67. Since you mention they are original, I am looking at this date very closely. We have photos of other cars built on that date also showing the 6A trim. If you get a Marti Report, we'd love to get the details. They really do help us to see the whole picture of when this likely shortage may have started and ended on or near that day(s). Thanks for your help Rob, and for the photo of #0010 with the early 6A trim!

Thanks again Kurt! We have you covered on the early cars with the 6A 'smooth' trim.
By the way, only about a dozen cars were built in February with the early 6A trim.

Michael, this might seems odd, but the earliest 5A 'comfortweave' trim built on a '67 Shelby at San Jose was November, 30 1966 (just one car).

The easiest way to explain this is the using the golden rule. Every DSO group of cars (no matter when it was started, or how long it took to finish) was built the same way for the entire run. The only variable was the paint color. The only exception to this would be a shortage of parts/materials.

Hi Denny,
The photo you posted, of a '67 Mustang, (not a '67 Shelby) appears to show 5A 'comfortweave' black trim, not the 6A 'smooth' black trim that is the focus of this thread.
We're looking for help from owners of '67 Shelby's with the later 6A 'smooth' trim from after ~VIN #2800.

Feel free to PM me if you want to discuss your (beautiful Acapulco Blue) car in the photo. Let's keep this thread on track.

Thanks,
Rich

I sent Denny a separate PM. I don't want to discourage anyone from posting about the 6A trim during the '67 production at San Jose.

After giving this more thought, we should find overlapping of the 5A trim shortage in the '67 Mustang as well as the '67 Shelby (same line).
We will need to identify the specific dates of the later 6A 'smooth' trim (in June and July '67) to compare against.

Thanks to those who have sent me PMs (and a few emails) on their cars with 6A trim and all the Marti info requested above.
Rich

Further scrutinizing of the Marti's (deluxe reports) show us the later built 6A black 'smooth' trim appears to be limited to just 5 of the 10 production paint colors.

Nightmist Blue,
Wimbledon White,
Dark Moss Green,
Lime Gold, and
Brittany Blue.

The one car that has been missing for years, the single unit Vintage Burgundy painted car, can only be guessed at based on the build date 7/10/67.
Without a Marti for that one, it will always be a guess. At the least, we have one Marti for another car built that date that show 5A trim. That's a start.

Thanks You Sir!

It would be great if you had a Marti Report to share the DSO item number, but we are grateful for whatever puzzle pieces we can get.

I was recently asked if I'm still working on identifying the later 6A trim 1967 Shelby's. My answer...
YES, ABSOLUTELY!!!

While new information is coming in at a snail's pace, here are a couple of tidbits to keep this subject moving forward.

-It currently appears possible that only one car in the DSO 2608 group may have the 6A trim based on the SJ build date. That Nightmist Blue car is #2933.
Finding the Marti report for that car might be key. There could be some others in this DSO group, built after this SJ build date, but so far we have not found any.
#2933 was built at San Jose on 6/5/67 and might be the first day this later 5A material shortage began.

-The remaining DSO groups to look at closely continue to be 2609, 2610, 2611, 2612, 2613, and 2614.

-Our current belief is there were at least three separate dates the materials shortage affected SJ builds.
Some of these dates extend over a few days before the 5A trim was replenished at the SJ factory.

Thank You SpartanSmoke.
Every car in this entire early DSO group 2505 should have the smooth 6A trim.
The DSO ITEM number is also a help, placing your car. #0062, in the SJ build order within that DSO group.

Thank You Wedgeman.
#2944 with 6A trim was built at SJ on 6/5/67 (a Monday). We have not found any cars with 5A trim on that day.
The material shortage may have started on 6/2/67 (Friday) since we found some cars with the 5A trim and none with 6A trim on the date.
...so far.

(I apologize if I'm repeating myself.)

All Parchment trim on the '67 Shelby's were the '5U' (comfortweave) code as ordered by SAI.

Hi Richstang;

I was the second owner of 67 GT350 3136.  I bought the car from Hemphill/McCombs Ford in San Antonio Texas in late 69 and then sold it from Sonoma California in 74.  In reading through this thread I notice that 3129 and 3132 have been reported as having the 6A or "smooth" trim code.  I don't have a Marti or build date but I am confident that 3136 had the 5A or "comfortweave" trim option.  Hope this helps.

Hi Grant,

Welcome to the forum!

Your memory serves you well. #3136 did not appear in a DSO group (2604) with the '5A' trim shortage.
I either talked to the current owner or maybe a close friend recently about it. It's in New Zealand now.
The base unit was built by Ford SJ on 7/3/67 so we're still watching the date just in case something pops up.
I'll make a note of a past owner reported '5A' trim.
Thank You!

After reviewing several Marti Elite reports (upper right statistics section) we're getting closer to indentifying all the later 6A trim equipped cars.
Currently, we have a clear indication of the Lime Gold and the Wimbledon White factory painted cars.

If anyone has a Marti ELITE report and is willing to share, please contact us to discuss.
I'm particularly focused on Elite reports for the following 5A or 6A trim cars
(listed in order of the ELITE reports upper right statistics; Model / Transmission/ Paint / Interior);

- GT500, Automatic, Nightmist Blue, Black 5A or 6A trim
- GT500, 4-speed, Dark Moss Green, Black 5A or 6A trim
- GT500, 4-speed, Brittany Blue, Black 5A or 6A trim

- GT350, Automatic, Dark Moss Green, Black 5A or 6A trim
- GT350, Automatic, Brittany Blue, Black 5A or 6A trim
- GT350, 4-speed, Nightmist Blue, Black 5A or 6A trim
- GT350, 4-speed, Dark Moss Green, Black 5A or 6A trim
- GT350, 4-speed, Brittany Blue, Black 5A or 6A trim

Thanks in advance for any help to get this mystery resolved!

Recently we received information that confirmed some of the 7/10/1967 San Jose built date cars had '6A' trim.

We've noticed late cars built on the June and July days identified have both '5A' and '6A' trim.
It would be helpful to add the '5A' trim cars to the '6A' trim days built at SJ in June / July.

We are charting the late build dates with the 5A and the 6A trim...

The SRG is still looking for all cars built in June and July, 1967, to confirm the trim used.
The DSO groups may be less relavant than the San Jose build dates.
More data is needed to confirm.
