That's not a Mustang II in the front. Too many differences when comparing 74-78 II's to car in photo.
To me it looks like a toyota corolla.
That's a Celica in front. I believe the writer was referring to it as a Japanese Mustang, since it looked like it was designed to follow the lines of a Mustang fastback.
We called it that, back in the day too.
