Title: S H E L B Y de Mejico
Post by: FL SAAC on January 30, 2020, 08:44:50 AM
The Mexican Shelbys were the brainchild of Eduardo Vélazquez. When in 1965 Ford of Mexico started manufacturing its own version of the Ford Mustang, Vélazquez teamed up with Carroll Shelby to act as a supplier of performance parts, aimed at converting regular Mustangs into GT350s. Shelby de Mexico was born.

But that's pretty much the US GT350, you're probably thinking. Well, demand increased, and both Shelby and Vélazquez agreed to create an actual dealership GT350 model based off the Mexican Mustang. Since the Mexican Mustang was only available as a coupé, the fastback and convertible models were discarded from the beginning. The only engine available was the 302ci straight from Ford's Mexican factories, giving it 315 HP. A total of 169 were sold in 1967 plus 203 more in 1968.

In 1969 the GT350 Mexico finally gained the iconic Shelby tailights. Unlike the US GT350 and GT500, it retained the 1969 Mustang's front end looks. Vélazquez sold 306 during that year, one of them being a special racing model commissioned by himself, and fitted with a 377ci motor capable of 450 HP at 7000 RPM. This was far more powerful than the ordinary 302, and dominated touring car racing in Mexico during 1969 and 1970.

In 1970, no Mexican Shelbys were built. The model would return for the following year as the GT351, although it had close to zero Shelby hardware. As the name indicates, it was powered by a stock 351ci V8, again made in Mexico. Production estimates are of 250 units for that year.

At the end of 1971, Shelby was out of business. The last Mexican Shelbys built were a 300 car run based off the Ford Maverick. Similarly to the GT351, there was no performance addition, nor actual Shelby hardware. These 300 cars marked the end of what was arguably the most interesting of all the Latin American classic cars.

Shelby fan since high school in the 60's.  Plenty of car shows, and SAAC conventions.  And yet I have never seen a 67' Shelby de Mexico.  Never.  Just the photos posted from when they were new.  Same with the 68's.

The Euzkadi brand is Mexican, founded by a group of entrepreneurs in 1928. The brand produces tires for passenger cars, SUVs and SUVs / vans.

Since 1998, Euzkadi has been acquired by Continental Group, which provided technological and financial support. Together, they won the fourth place in the Mexican market, producing approximately 7 million tires/year.

el carro # 192

Although the first production Shelby de Mexico's weren't built until 1967, this car (a 1965 coupe prepared by Lew Spencer and Carroll Shelby's High Performance Motors) can technically be considered to be the first Shelby de Mexico. This car was driven to a class win at the Mexico Toluca Road Race by driver Juan Emilio Proal.

The problem with those cars is that they are just production Mexican Mustangs with various parts added.

There are no two exactly alike and they were ordered according to what the buyer wanted.

There are no Shelby VIN tags on them like the US versions so they are essentially regular Mustangs with stripes added here and there.

For that matter, there are probably some that are standard 6 cylinder with 3 speed transmissions?

The combination of parts on them is a perfect example of "cash talks, nobody walks" and there is no such thing as standard "Shelby equipment" on them...unfortunately.

Odd in that most of the pictures that come up when you Google "Shelby de Mexico has the emblem placement all over.  There isn't much consistency.  I've seen the snake emblem either on the roof panel above the wheel, on the front fender above the GT 350, or, no snake emblem at all.
Plus, it is the same with that thin rocker moulding, either the car has it, or, not at all.

Yes, interesting indeed.  This is a look into the way things used to be back in the day, especially with respect to Carroll's life style.  Men who participated in such events would be branded as politically incorrect, misogynistic, and who knows what else by today's standards.  For sure, Carroll was known as a lady's man and now we see why.  Now I'm not defending these men, just pointing out how different things are today.

Velasquez had become a Shelby parts dealer, and in 1967 he entered into a partnership with Carroll Shelby which resulted in a company called "Shelby de Mexico."
Anybody know the extent of the "partnership"? Did CS have a desk/office and actually participate or are the cars the first of his licensing deals?

Still doesn't mention extent of partnership. The one paragraph that says "Velasquez was, however able to build the business up....." leads me to believe it was a licensing deal only where CS had no direct involvement and sold them parts to build cars he collected a royalty on.

There is also some BS on that site about CS selling the Cobra name to Ford. Ford seized it along with all the other trademarks and assets when he could not repay the 5 year startup loan they gave him in 1962. That he could not sell "Cobra" parts is also 100% false. Here is an ad for parts from 1968. CS is still selling "Cobra" stuff but as a middleman for Ford Parts - which is why he can use the name in his ads.  I'd wager the Mexico deal required them to buy the parts from CS or lose the car deal. CS was totally in the Torrance address in November 67.

I should have looked in my own archives on this........
A final nail in the "partnership" coffin is the SA memo about how CSs companies will operate in the future with no mention of Shelby de Mexico
