I looked at this car back in 2017, along with a 67 GT500 that belonged to his ex wife (it was for sale).  Sorry to hear that the owner passed.  Interesting guy.  Had several Mustangs/Shelby's over the years.  I have a '69 Boss 302 that he owned in 1970 - 71.  The '68 was not for sale when I was there.  I may be wrong, but I do not think that this is actually the first 1968 Shelby built.  There were several others built before this one.  Maybe Pete can shed some light on this?  The 1967 GT500 had an interesting story, and I heard that it finally sold but I do not know where it went.

Here is a photo of Talbert's car at the same event.

Great video!  Thanks for sharing Brian! At the 11:13 mark, you can see the #3 (of 16) Group II Trans Am Shelby Coupe that was purchased by Peter Talbert.  On the Shelby invoice for this car, it shows that it was sent from SA to Camp Stoneman, in Pittsburg California for an SCCA race (this event), along with the Flip Top Cobra.  This was Talbert's first race in the car.  The sponsorship on the rear quarter panels for this race was Hayward Ford.  On the front fenders, was a small decal with Talbert's newly started publication, "Motorsport International".  It is my understanding that the magazine only lasted about 6 issues.  I restored that car for the current owner who has owned it for 41 years!  It is still vintage raced.

As we all know, the auctions can provide us with some guidance as to a vehicles value, but sometimes, things are not as they seem.  I was involved in the private sale of a concourse Carryover '66 GT350 that sold for over $300k in 2018.  Unfortunately, these private sales often go unnoticed to the big companies that evaluate the market.  On the other hand....maybe that is a good thing!

Wanted to Buy / Re: '67 R-Code Fairlane or Comet
June 11, 2020, 10:11:00 AM
There was a 67 XL "R" Code Fairlane on Facebook several days ago under the Fairlane parts and cars for sale page.  I think it was $59k.  Engine was out, looked to be original paint, which was very faded with surface rust.  Excellent interior.

According to the "Mustang Production Guide" by Jim Smart and Jim Haskell, as Bill stated, the first Mustangs built at Dearborn as 1965 models (alternator charging system instead of generators) were built starting August 1st, 1964 and started with VIN number 250000.  This car is listed in the registry section of that book.  The authors also state that the "often published and believed" transition date for 65 production was August 17, 1964 although they show August 1st as the date that production began.  It is my opinion that this may very well be a show unit or promo car.  Sounds very cool!

I posted last November that I am in need of a pair of Hi Po 289 heads (Sept.,1966), for a two-digit 67 GT350.  I was given some help from a few members (thank you!) and am now widening my search to include July or August of 1966 dates.  Any leads would be appreciated.  My good friend is about to start the restoration and has the original block, but is lacking a pair of cylinder heads.

Up For Auction / Re: SFM6S061 Up for Auction
December 10, 2018, 04:11:38 PM
Might as well throw my hat in to the ring.....I am recalling these results from memory, because I am having trouble logging in to Russo and Steele, but in 2015 at Russo and Steele, Monterey, 6S213 was auctioned off, and I believe that the hammer price was $295k.  In 2017, at RS Monterey, 6S250 sold for a hammer price of $300k.  Maybe someone here can log in and either confirm or disprove these results.  Either way, I am guessing that even with it's shortcomings, 6S061 will bring close to this money.

Thanks Bob, I will try to post photos of the ends of the bar so we can identify.  Any idea who supplied the 1 inch bars to Ford/Shelby?

Gentleman;

It is hitting both strut rods, and one side of the frame rail.  I have 4 other 66's in my shop, and only one, which is a B-Production vintage race car, with an original 1 inch sway bar, shows signs of a very slight interference with the drivers side frame rail.  No interference with the strut rods.  I think that the ride height plays a role in the frame rail interference, but the contact with the strut rods seems to be a product of the curve of the bar, as it exits the bushings and curves rearward.

Thanks for taking the time Bob.

Hi all;

Working on a 66 Carryover car, and noticed a slight interference between the front sway bar and the strut rods, as well as the front frame rail on one side, where the rail is notched.  At first, we thought maybe we had a 67 sway bar on there, but after a lot of research, we are convinced that we have the correct 65 - 66 1 inch sway bar.  The bar barely hits, but it is enough to make noise.  After some research, we also learned that there was at least one Shelby that went back for warranty repair, to correct sway bar interference with the frame rail, and a ride height adjustment as well (which would help this issue).  This car has the original hi po front coils in it (I cleaned them and found the reddish-brown stripes on them).  I have two questions for the group;  first, has anyone had these problems, and second, who was the original supplier of sway bars to SA?  Thanks in advance for the help.
