1968 Shelby GT350/500/500KR / Front Shelby letter placement guide

Hey guys -

I picked up a replacement fiberglass panel a while back and finally decided to install the letters this morning. I think the dimple placement guy was drunk when he made the mold.

Anyway, I have a spare and was wondering what steps you guys take to get them straight and evenly spaced.

1968 Shelby GT350/500/500KR / Loud starter issue

Hi guys -

Any of you ever experience a loud initial start up on a 68 GT500? It kinda screams when the starter engages. Fresh rebuild, maybe 1500 miles. I just replaced the (newish) starter with a new new one and the noise problem still persists... not the biggest deal, just kind of embarrassing.

Thought I'd phone a friend.

What have y’all used to freshen this up? I saw branda referenced a separate reproduction part in the center piece listing, but it’s nowhere to be found on his site, nor any other of the usual sites.

Also, what is the correct way to attach the emblem? It works like my original was glued…?

1968 Shelby GT350/500/500KR / Power steering return hose tear

Hey all -

Have been giving 685 some light use since getting back on the road (finally).

Totally sorted mechanically, with all the major systems having been overhauled. Anyway, yesterday pulling out of the garage, I noticed a (heavy) trail of AT. Once up, I noticed that the PS return hose tore at the bracket. Clearly has been getting pinched between the bracket and the metal protective wrap.

Is this common? Ordered a replacement from Dead Nuts, but am looking to avoid this from happening again… and again.

Solutions or advice?

Hey all -

I’m having some problems with my tail lights - basically nothing is working properly, most not at all.

I went out and picked up some new bulbs - 1157’s - and they’re a bear to install, when the even fit.

Anyway, after installing the new bulbs, all the running lights were working on the drivers side and the passengers side were on, but faint compared to the drivers side. Blinkers weren’t working, nor were brake lights.

I decided to remove the whole panel and see what was going on inside... mistake #1.

I then moved inside the car and started tinkering with the blinker switch. I swapped out the blinker can with a new (553) and cleaned up the contacts on the turn signal switch. They are now functioning - I hear the can clicking and they work on the front lights as the all should (individual blinkers and hazards)...

What’s really strange is now none of the running lights work. When the hazards are on, the three passengers bulbs flash and the inner drivers side does as well. What’s even stranger is when an individual blinker is engaged, the same thing happens. 3 on the right and 1 on the left, regardless of which blinker is used. This could have something to do two wires that were cut and tucked - a thicker black and a regular red - that I tried reconnecting to each other.

So, does anyone have wiring diagrams for the whole back tail light section? I’m flying blind here and am totally confused looking at regular mustang wiring.

Extra points if someone knows what in the heck is going on and has a solution!

During my mockup, I noticed noticed a gap where the AC bracket that holds the pulley meets the PS bracket at the block. Small gap, more like a thick washer. Is that true? I didn’t exactly tighten every bolt up, as it was just a mock run, but it gave me pause.

Dropped the engine in yesterday! Looking forward to being on the other side of that mountain.

So, I have some time on my hands these days... Yay, quarantine

Wondering if anyone has detailed photos of a 68 PI together on a stand just before install? I’d love to have an out-of-the-car reference, if possible.

Also, what is conventional wisdom when it comes to installing components on the engine and inn the engine bay before dropping the drivetrain back in? I’ve never reinstalled a BB motor/trans, only SB’s which have all the room. Can I sneak the drivetrain in with the brake booster and master preinstalled? Any other best practices I should know?

Any wisdom and imagery from your vaults would be greatly appreciated! I WILL get this car back together during this CA lockdown.

With the communities blessing, I’d like to exercise humility and operate with the motto that “there are no stupid questions”. I’ve feel like I’ve done my research and I have *most* of my ducks in a row. Admittedly, one major mistake I made was during disassembly - 2 or 3 years ago now - I went light on pictures. Foolishly, I expected the engine rebuild to be done in a matter of weeks (based on past experience with the builder) and that turned into a year and a half... so my memory is very, very faded.

So, I ask - would a single thread be the best way to ask all of my questions, would you rather I bombard you with individual posts, or keep my mouth shut and let my ego wing it?
