CSX 3000 Series / Re: Close Ratio / Wide Ratio Opinions 427 Cobra
« on: February 20, 2023, 08:30:28 PM »
A 3.70 isn't the quantum leap above a 3.50 as you may think.  I stated I previously had a 3.50 rear end in my Cobra so you could buy into my overall evaluation of a wide ratio Toploader.

Unusable?  It doesn't matter if you have a wide or close ratio, a 3.50 or a 3.70 rear in a Cobra that has substantial horsepower.  That's why prudent use of the right foot is so important when driving a Cobra.  I never stab the throttle, I 'tip in' to reduce the surprise factor.

The last gentleman I took for a power ride, remarked after we ran through 1st, 2nd and 3rd gears that he thought the car's rear tires were almost breaking traction.  I grinned and said the tires were actually roasting rubber for the majority of the sprint.

I've owned a replica Cobra big block for 29 years.  There have been 2 Toploader transmissions in my car, both wide ratio.  Rear end ratio is 3.70, but I also ran a 3.50 rear for a number of years.  The current transmission is a David Kee-built aluminum body unit with a big input shaft and small output shaft.

The 1st gear ratio in my car is just right for pulling away from a stop, engine speed slightly above idle and normal clutch engagement.  I state that because I know a Cobra owner with a big block, 3.54 rear end ratio, and a close ratio Toploader.  Each time he pulls out from a stop it's obvious he has to raise his rpm's and slip his clutch more than I do.  I once asked him about what I was hearing and he became defensive and said "It's fine like it is."

SAAC-47 / Attendance

We were at Indy in 2017, but didn't get there this year.  Was the attendance similar to 2017?

Hollywood, huh. Matt Damon as Shelby. Don't expect much.

We found the movie to be very engrossing and entertaining.  I had reservations about Damon as Shelby.  After watching the movie I felt he endeavored to accurately portray the man.  We watched the movie for about the 6th time last week.

Four nominations for Oscar, two actual wins.

Some folks on this site seem to sit on the glass half empty side of the table.

I'm not sure if it was that day, the first time I hit 7,200 in second gear but it was the first time I tested my brakes when a hay truck came rolling out in front of me to see what was going on with the Cobras in front of me.

And...I'm reminded of an afternoon cruise I ONCE took with a neighbor; him in his Corvette, me in my pretend Cobra.  About 6-8 miles into the drive, he was WAY ahead of me because he was passing cars on a double yellow-lined 45 mph road.  Eventually he pulled over and waited on me.  He admonished me for driving so slowly.  I told him "I have the 'go fast' thing figured out, it's the high speed 'stopping' thing that has me concerned."

So we pulled away from the side of the road and again he started with the high speed driving on a 2-lane road, posted at 30 mph with connecting residential driveways every 500 feet.  We never cruised together again.

Those GT350's thrill me, love the sound.  My wife and I enjoy them at SAAC events when the 289's scream by us at 8,000 rpm during the vintage racing.

Do I open up my car on a public road...sometimes.  When there's no approaching traffic and any following traffic is far behind me.  I'll typically take out my roadster for a 25-40 mile drive.  Most of the time I'm lucky to find enough road with almost zero traffic that I can get through 2 to 3 gears at 7,000 rpm, once and occasionally twice during that drive.

But here's my take on the video.  Right foot to the floor and slamming gears while passing traffic in the adjacent lane is the wrong place and time.  It's dangerous and wholly inconsiderate.

This conversation is borderline funny, but it is serious. I don't know any of the peeps commenting here, but if I were to guess, I would say the average age is 10 years old. DO you remember the days when you would ask you mother if you could go out and play, and she said no, then you would ask you father and he would say yes? In reading this, it seems like this is the case. LOL

Yep.

My wife and I have enjoyed quite a few national SAAC events in the past 10 years, and we fully intended to attend SAAC 45, but we won't because;
a. we're both 67 years old and thus members of the 'target' group of those who are most likely to be affected by COVID-19.  Additionally, my wife's immune system was severely challenged 5 years ago because of chemotherapy and radiation treatments and is permanently immune-challenged.
b. we staunchly support the measures necessary to stem the propagation of COVID-19.

Mandates by our governments; fed, state and local, seem to be necessary because so many folks and groups aren't able to throttle-back on social activities on their own because those preventive measures were initially just 'strongly" encouraged.  Too many folks see themselves as a 'tree' rather than as part of the 'forest'.  This weekend I was driving through our small town and looked over at the local Irish pub.  Patrons were lined up waiting to get in and socialize shoulder to shoulder and face to face, just as they did in years past when Coronavirus was an unknown.

Regarding gasket kits...the Ebay seller is a very good source.  I understand he's temporarily out of kits, but will eventually resume sales of them.

I've bought 20+ sets from him during the past 5 years. Early on when I asked him if each of the gaskets in his kit were compatible with today's gas/ethanol blends, he checked and found several were not.  He then remedied the issue and for years his gasket set has and still contains ethanol compatible pieces.  His kit includes a new black power wire.

I don't use vintage NOS gaskets for the reason stated above.

We liked it immensely.  Four of us went as a group, two are 66 years old, two are over 70.  I had to pee, but held it for more than an hour, didn't want to miss anything.  :P
