CSX 3000 Series / Re: CSX 3116 Information

Our records show Gagnard sold 3116 in '88. Its next owner, from Aptos, CA, consigned it in 2013 to Grand Prix Classics in La Jolla, CA. I lived in La Jolla at the time and photographed it before it was sold to a buyer from France. Here is one of the advertising photos of the car from that period:

The "AC 289 Sports" was named that to avoid confusion between it and the earlier leaf-spring cars that were still available when the latter was introduced. They are Cobras in every sense. And even though chassis numbers 6128-6132 exist, those were lengthened bare chassis built for use in a film for Paramount Studios that were not originally built as Cobras, even though most have been in the years since..

It is COB 6113, and Gerry sold it about 2 years ago to the current owners. My car is just 2 chassis numbers away, but has one big difference: the COX in its VIN denotes left hand drive. And an update to the earlier note that these were "built after Cobra production ended:" The AC 289 was AC's response to the Shelby 427 Cobra, built for the consumer who did not need a big-block but wanted the improved coil spring chassis. They were built on the standard assembly line along with the CSX cars headed to Shelby. The first sale of an AC 289 was in the fall of '65, and the last was delivered in early '69.

Prior owner in CA added a dome instead of a scoop. Was changed quickly.

CSX 2000 Series / Anyone recognize the plate or car?
« on: December 15, 2023, 03:40:28 PM »
I'm thinking these shots posted the other day are of CSX 2151, which spent time in Hawaii, western Canada, and British Columbia. Does anyone recognize where the license plate - FEK 639 - might be from?

The peculiar flares and wheels are like those found in early photos of what was later named "The Hairy Canary," CSX 2151.

I'm thinking that's CSX 3274 with Doug McClellan's MI plate on it. Mid- '70s.

The car was CSX 3322. Winter's ownership is documented in the Cobra Registry.

The car pictured in the magazine article above is not CSX 3054, which was the big-block "Super Coupe." If you look closely, you'll see it looks like one of the original small-block Daytona Coupes. How can that be? Maybe the car in the article is CSX 2286, which was the last of the coupes to be finished even though it was the lowest chassis number. Its completion was delayed by a request by Carroll Shelby to lengthen the chassis by 3 inches and install a Ford 390 cubic-inch engine rather than a 289. Aha. A 7-litre Cobra Coupe. Except that it never got built. It was determined that the standard 289 version was what was needed, and the 390 car was cancelled. But it appears that's the car that was written up in that German article.

Has to be the former water-car, CSX 3184, right?

And as anyone who has spent time in the northeast knows, a car that lived in a climate like that and was used during the winter didn't take long to develop corrosion from the salt used to melt the snow and ice from the roadways. I suspect that poor blue Shelby either met an untimely death or helped teach its restorer some new curse words.

Lewis Roy Ford only comes up with CSX 3115, as it was the dealership through which Dr. Albritton purchased the car. If the same shop was connected with another Cobra, we have no record of it, sorry to say.

Nah. If it's just a sap meet, I'm not going.

Yes, 2494 was at the track. I have some photos but they are still undigitized slides. Got to work on my technology...

Side Oilers, no, Dan sold his Cobra several years ago. Last I heard of it, the car was being offered for sale in the Netherlands over the summer of 2021. And as for the maroon 289 above, it is likely Lynn's CSX 2515.
