I have an original oil cooler and brackets. I think I also have  some door panels and interior panels .ill look for some of the other items.... p.m. me...john brown

when we restored 002 we found evidence that at one time they had a side scoop and a duct running through the floor to the rear brakes...john brown

r models were ordered in 3 batches. for the mostpart, the first 2 batches had their rear quarter panels sectioned and radiused, the last batch did not.
    When we restored 5r002 we put the quarter panels and wheelhouses back to an original mustang configuration and we flew Jerry Schwarz (who did all of the work on all the gt350r models) in and had him do the rear quarter panels just like he did them in 1965. The process he used was not anything like what we had envisioned that would have been done. We vidotaped the entire process and his 3 hour long interview about building all the r-models.
     He told us that he originally cut 1 1/2 inches out of the rear openings to gain tire clearance because of the large amount of roll that the car had under hard cornering due to no rear sway bar.
He also stated that sometime around April of 1965 he went with the crew on a tire testing day and while he was there they determined that did not need the additional clearance on the rear quarter panels for the tires that they were running and that all they needed to do was roll the rear quarter panel lips and flare the quarter panel slightly.
    He suggested that they do that from then on and it saved a tremendous amount of time.
    When we restored 5r213 (which may have been the last car of the second batch) we determined from original pictures that the quarter panels on it had also been sectioned and radiused but on both 5r534 and 5r538 (which were in the last batch) neither of those cars quarter panels were cut, only rolled with a slight flare....john brown

Tim, there are over 100 boots in the ford truck master parts catalogue for under base numbers 2a713, 7242, and 7277 for f500, f600, c-f-t750,f900, and f1000. there was no f450 but the f250 and 350 had the pull handle under the dash. the f500 through f1000 had 4 different park brake configurations with the "orschlein" type being the most common but it was dependent on the transmission type as to how the park lever was configured. call me for more info on what you need. I have every ford parts book for cars and trucks from 1925...john brown

I spoke with Jim Wicks yesterday and I was in Tulsa today, all is well so far. Much more rain and tornados tonight but no reports of damage at any of the facilities we use. Water in the Arkansas river is high but most of the city of Tulsa is protected. outlying suburbs are not so lucky. Lake Keystone dam, which is on the Arkansas river above Tulsa, is dangerously high and scheduled for an historic release of water beginning today. As of now things are ok, but if it keeps raining every day things will deteriorate quickly, but we are supposed to dry out this weekend. If all goes well most of the water will be down by the time the meet starts...John Brown

As 1966 head judge I agree with this decision 100%. However, I do not understand why the points on the car in question would be reinstated due to something found in the archives. In the past 30 years since I have been a head judge we have changed judging rules and scoring on various items at least 6 times (without the approval of the board). The current sheets were just reworked few years ago and many point values changed and some things that had been allowed in the past were revised. I personally do not ever remember us ever allowing a color change in any of the classes, but if we did back then, a lot of rules have changed since then, and it is very clear on the current judging sheets that it is a mandatory 30 point deduction for a color change. We learn more about the "marque" all the time and the judging rules over the years have been changed to reflect this new knowledge.
   Having said all that, the decision of the board is final and I accept that. They are the ultimate authority and I will abide by whatever decision they make.

its hard to tell 100% from the picture but it looks like a standard pop rivet, installed from the inside, with a pop rivet washer on the outside of the scoop just as it should be on that late of a car. I think it still has the head of the pop rivet shaft still in the rivet so it looks like  a strange rivet that was installed from the outside.   john brown

When we restored 5r002 we did put the door tag on it just like 5s003 and 5r001. We had that picture (and more) and we knew it should be there. for some of those shows where we had to leave the car outside, we removed it so it could not be stolen.
    As to the timing of the placement of the under hood tags, during an interview with Jerry Schwarz he indicated the he in fact put the 3 Shelby number plates on the cars. He said that  when they were moving to the LAX facility they needed to move a large number of cars (approx. 40) to the new location. They hired some temporary workers who had drivers licenses to move the cars to LAX. The next morning one of the cars showed up missing. They were supposed to have all the data plates attached to the cars before they moved them but not all of them were attached and these first three cars were still sitting over in the corner and did not get the data plates put on. That morning Jerry said he could hear Carroll Shelby yelling in the office and the next thing he heard was "jerry come to the office" over the intercom. He thought he was in big trouble and when he entered the office he saw Carroll standing there with three data plates in his hand and he said "get these put on those cars before they move them". Jerry said he went over and got his pop rivet gun and put them on the cars with out any regard to which car was 1st, 2nd, or 3rd, and that is how they were misnumbered.
   When Jerry told this story at the banquet at SAAC 39, Ted Sutton spoke up and said the car that was stolen was a cobra but some of the others had never heard that story about the stolen car. Jerry thought the car was Mustang.
  We were pretty confident that the date was sometime around the end of January 1965 but someone else might have an exact date...John Brown
