I’m getting ready to send out my drive shaft for restoration.
    -  Replace the tube & restore what I believe to be the original u-joints.

Did Ford typically install the balance weights at a certain distance from the ends?
    - I included photos of my crusty drive shaft assy.
        - Shows 2 weights at the yoke end, and then 1 weight at the rear end u-joint.

There are still small amounts of the original paint markings.  (Orange, violet)
Originally appears to be correct, based on my knowledge.

Thoughts/Comments appreciated.
Thanks
Fran

Interested in understanding production line paint markings.

I observed many markings on the rear housing after doing a basic clean and external inspection of the assy from my car.
Is there a general understanding of what job aid, or production line process step these refer to ?

The center section has the typical orange and yellow paint color markings. (photo attached)

The axle housing has:
 - blue paint lines at the brake line junction block and axle vent hose coupling (photo attached)
 - yellow wide paint marking on the passenger side, by the brake backing plate (photo attached)
 - yellow “X” paint marking where the 2 brakes lines meet. (photo attached)
 - light yellow paint marking at the drivers side end, near the brake baking plate. (photo attached)
 - white marking on the center section rear of housing. I’m not sure if that is a number? (photo attached)
 - orange paint marking (line) near the brake junction block. (photo attached)

Sorry, I can only attach 4 photos.
Others available on request.

I’d be interested to hear from folks that can explain these.
I’m guessing that these are typical of what is found on other rear axle housing assemblies.
Thank you!

1968 Shelby GT350/500/500KR / Smog Pump Marking, GT500KR
« on: June 08, 2022, 09:38:17 PM »
Date  8 G 11 1 (July 11th 1st shift)
There are two paint markings on my pump.
(Blue and Orange?
The blue paint mark looks more like overspray.
The orange (or similar color) is more like a brush on mark across the Mfg stamping date.

I believe this pump is original to the car.
I want to put these markings back on the unit as part of the restoration.
Are these markings consistent with late July built cars?

Thank you

Fran

Searching for guidance on a rear brake hardware kit.
I’m confused..
Rear Brake Shoe retaining springs .
I think these are original to the car.
One is colored black, the other is blue.
The are actually wound different direction.
Is this correct? ….as I’m finding it difficult to find a kit or even Ford part numbers that reference these.

Attached is a photo of the springs.  These were installed in both the drivers and passenger side rear brakes.
Also attached is photo of the marking on the brake lining.

Any assistance is appreciated. Thank You
Fran

While I was preparing my GT500KR for restoration, and removing the windshield, I noticed yellow markings on the windshield. This was under the stainless trim and rubber seal.

Initially I thought it was just crap from years… maybe that’s all it is.
The windshield has a date code that tends to align with the build date of the car for what it’s worth.

The marking looks like an “8” “-d” “J”
Is this a marking that appears on other cars that still have their original windshield?
Thoughts?

1968 Shelby GT350/500/500KR / 428CJ Starter, FE hot start real or?
« on: October 24, 2021, 03:28:34 PM »
GT500KR Starter, should I rebuild it or….? To prevent hot starting potential problem.

This car had the starter replaced under warranty at Gotham Ford @ 2836 miles. From what I can determine by reading the shop order, it was related to heated starting. The starter was replaced with PN C8AZ 11002 A. ($27.18)

The case stamping and front nose casting engineering numbers) don’t seem right, but this may have been replaced again at some point. ( 15k mile on odometer)

If this car has good cabling, battery, starter solenoid and grounding, can I use an original starter without having starter “ failure” due to heat?

I’ve included photos of the starter markings for any comments..

I getting ready to send out parts for rebuild and I noticed 1969 Casting Numbers on my KR water pump.
I believe the pump is original to the car, as are most items, other what has been replaced due to accidents…
The date code seems correct/possible for my car.
The question I have is, was the updated 1969 water pump design used on late builds of the 1968 GT500KRs?
Has anyone else observed this on a late build KR?
See attached photo for the casting number and build date.
Thank you for all comments!

I need some guidance on which is correct for this car.
I have 2 different reflector types.  One that has this divided into 2 sections and then another that has four sections.
The markings on the units are the same, but clearly the reflector is different.
The Ford parts book does call out what I believe is a change that was made.
I’ve included  the  part numbers in the photos attached.
Any comments or guidance is appreciated.
Thank you

Wanted to Buy / 1968 GT500KR Flywheel. 428CJ.
« on: October 26, 2020, 10:00:09 PM »
Still looking.
I did purchase an NOS flywheel.  Upon receiving the flywheel, I noticed that every pressure plate mounting bolt hole/thread had a “plugged” hole and these broke into the section where the pressure plate bolts fasten.
I’ve discussed this with my engine builder and he is telling me to locate another flywheel. He is concerned about using it

I’ll really prefer using the cast iron design.
Does anyone have a used proper stamped part number design that I can get resurfaced and install a new ring gear?
Any leads appreciated..
Thank you
Fran
