1965 GT350/R-Model / 5S109 is alive again
May 16, 2020, 09:48:07 PM
After 40+ years of not running I put the original VIN stamped engine together and she is close to being put back into the car.  I still have to paint the headers, and starter but she is healthy.

Enjoy the symphony of a HiPo 289.

The 3939S fuel pump is being rebuilt by Fred but I couldn't wait  ;D

Can someone share a picture of the proper wire routing.  I have the original wire but not sure where the second bracket mounts to.

Thank you!

1965 GT350/R-Model / Alternator bolt markings
April 28, 2020, 09:56:25 AM
As I reassembled the original alternator I noticed the bolts that hold the case together had markings similar to others throughout the engine so I thought I would share.  The full thread was on the engine bolt with spacer side and the ones with the shank on the other two sides.

Looking for Wittek tower clamps for a 65 with  2,3 or 4-64 date code

Qty (2) 1-1/16" with a 2 stamped on the inside (bypass hose) 7/16" inch wide
Qty (2) 1-1/16" with a 10 stamped on the inside (heater hose) 1/2" inch wide

Qty (2).... 1-15/16" Upper radiator hose
Qty (2)..... 2-3/16" Lower radiator hose.

From what I have researched and learned from my previous post this would be the correct clamps.

Thank you for your help.

I have seen it painted black as the engine block etc... and I have seen them not.  Which is assembly line correct?  I believe black, but I wasn't sure if SA changed the hose or not.

Thank you.

The Lounge / Advice.... on metal prep and cleaning
April 19, 2020, 08:20:38 PM
I have been working on and restoring vehicles since I was a kid and like many of you, I started out crude, wire brush and brake clean, dawn dish detergent and then a coat of paint.  Then I purchased my first blast cabinet and blasted everything because it was easy :-).  Through the years my methods have evolved for the better and I find that the more I have done, the more appreciation I have for "gentle" cleaning to preserve markings and correct paint.

The advice I have for anyone getting into the hobby is to gently clean your parts with various cleaners.  It will take more time but you will be really pleased as the finishes are preserved.  I don't blast very much unless it is cast iron or sheet metal that is going to be painted.

I use a small fine wire brush with acetone and/or paint thinner to clean most parts.  I have a heated parts washer that I will use for large items but I'm really careful with any aluminum or soft metal parts as they will oxidize fast.  Cast iron gets an overnight soak and soft parts get 20-30 mins then a clean water bath.  Evaporust is a great cleaner for most anything.  Be very careful cleaning anything rubber and don't use purple power type cleaners as the rubber will give up its "fat" and will dry out and crack over time, use dish detergent.

I use a tumbler for some small parts but I find I don't use it much anymore.  I coat anything bare with Boshield.  If I do blast any metal and I'm not ready to paint, I wipe the part down with Picklex 20, it works great.

I have had to learn the hard way on what works and what doesn't and would like to help anyone that isn't that familiar before they destroy a really great part with the wrong cleaning methods

On any restoration, 85% is planning, preparation and cleaning for a great result.

Don't forget to wear your PPE, gloves, masks and eye protection.

1965 GT350/R-Model / Early Bell Housing and Oil cap
April 19, 2020, 07:17:55 PM
I figured this would be interesting to share as well.  The bell housing is a late 64, pretty much everything on this engine is Aug to Oct 64.  The oil cap is original and not a repop, it has survived well.

Is the bracket supposed to be painted or bare steel?

Thanks!

1965 GT350/R-Model / Original Painted Fan Spacer
April 17, 2020, 10:48:41 PM
I have researched and from all the pictures I find, the fan spacer is shown as cast.

The engine in 5S109 was pulled in the early 70's and the original owner put a Boss 302 in it but stored the original engine.  The engine wasn't restored but it was put aside and left untouched for 40+ years.  When I bought the car I started the rebuild of the engine so I got to clean a lot of parts  :).  The fan spacer was clearly painted black, the fan had not been painted and neither had any of the pulleys.  There wouldn't have been any reason for anyone to have messed with it.  I am wondering if anyone else has seen this?  Thanks

1965 GT350/R-Model / More interesting parts
April 17, 2020, 08:04:03 PM
I figured I would post some things I found from the original engine.

The coil when cleaned has its original stamp.

Opened up 3939S fuel cannister to find an original element I believe.  Cannister is scratched up but I can't expect better from a 55 YO part.

The HiPO motor mounts look great when cleaned.

1965 GT350/R-Model / Bell Housing bolt markings

Thought this might be interesting.  Cleaned the bolts for the bell housing.

I cleaned the pulley up and repainted it.  The interesting thing is, the number was clear on the front so I put a piece of tape over it to preserve it when I repainted it and the new paint matches perfect with the old... Really happy about that!

I also cleaned up the washer pump and happy with how it is turning out and it works  :)

Hello, an update....

I rebuilt the original distributor in my 65, turned out really nice I think.  Working on the original alternator now, I see why they shelved it as one of the diodes had come loose from the board.  It's all cleaned and ready to reassemble once I have the new brushes and bearing.

Up For Auction / I don't understand the logic
April 09, 2020, 10:22:54 AM
I find it humorous and disturbing that someone would give their hard earned cash for an item such as this.

Really, someone wants a cancelled check?

https://www.ebay.com/itm/1966-SHELBY-AMERICAN-INC-CHECK-TO-HOLLEY-CARBURETOR-CO-LIKELY-FOR-LEMANS-CARBURE/362433982242?hash=item5462bfaf22:g:uDUAAOSw-cFbmFY8

Next they will be trying to sale his road rash undies for Corona Virus masks... LOL

The Lounge / HiPo head rocker studs
March 30, 2020, 08:49:47 PM
I have obtained a pair of hipo heads with the hex screw in studs.  My question is... when I put the studs back in what sealer do I use and what is the torque spec for them?

Thank you!
