JD's Original 2010 forum text

Like them or loathe them a number of 1967 Shelby Mustangs got lights at the rear of the upper scoops on the sail panels.  This is an attempt to compile a list of cars up to or about the first 200 believed to be the cut-off point of these having been installed by Shelby American employees at the Los Angeles airport facility.  This is a work in progress and like many of the running changes on the '67's it is difficult at times to determine what was on these cars when they where completed and is to start a discussion to better understand this running change.  I'm sure others know more on this than I do and will have input on this.

Some early sales literature for the '67's show Lowell Otter's '67 Red GT500 Prototype with a chrome ring, similar to or the same as the tail lights on some Daytona Coupes.  The ones used on most(?) of the production cars were without the chrome ring.  (These were also used as clearance lights on the trailers of semi's of the day.)

While referencing the '97 Registry and compiling a list of cars from #143 and up (it seems as though most of the cars prior to this did get them (car #22 did not) - if you have or know of a car below #143 that does not have them please post it) it was interesting to note that car #145 (GT350) does have them and was completed 1-6-67.  Cars completed on 1-6-67 range from #145 to #328 which begs the question are there cars up into the 300's that have these lights?

Also interesting that the first week of January 1967, Tuesday the 3rd through Friday the 6th, 81 cars were completed!  Fred Goodell was working at Shelby in December of 1966 and he is the one that implemented many procedures to complete cars faster and discovered that these light were not legal in many states prompting their being discontinued.

The original thread on the old forum was started by JD way back in October 2010.

I'm going to attempt to rebuild many of its components starting with the original post and the text JD wrote. I'll follow with an updated list.

Please be patient with me while I put this together. (Perhaps holding back comments until I can gather / post some of the informational posts and photos.)
Here's a link to the archived thread in the meanwhile.

The Lounge / Re: Marconi Museum in Orange County CA

From the bios they had posted by the cars it certainly indicated the 67 and 68 were loaners for sure.  An interesting thing they had in the bio for the 65 Shelby is that it was used to create the engine noise for Eleanor in Gone in 60 Seconds movie.

George Watters was the sound editor on the Movie. He said they did NOT use that Marconi '65 Shelby for Eleanor sounds.
Nothing for the Eleanor Mustang was done with any of the Marconi cars.

The museum had several Ferrari's which matched his want list for the Ferrari warehouse theft scene. They recorded all the hood/door openings & closings, the indoor engine start ups, and the Ferrari's driving out the warehouse door in there. I believe George also mentioned the Lamborghini's were recorded there as well...no Shelby's or Mustang's.

I've recently discussed the Shelby's offline with a few other forum members. I believe the '65 5s544 is owned by Marconi, but the red '68 and 'Brittany Blue '67 are new arrivals and possibly on loan for display. (Previously there was a red '67 on loan, and a black jade '69 also on loan).

Cory did you happen to get the ID numbers for the 67 or 68?

None of the 69 team cars ran torque thrust wheels. It was 200s wheels at the beginning of the season and then when they started breaking the slowly switched over to minilites. This is the prototype 69 Trans Am Boss 302 car. 9F02R112073. It was a Shelby team car.

Thanks for the info on the torque thrusts, these early photos, and the VIN.
Great Stuff Here!!!

My notes have 073 listed with its first race appearance on 7/20/69 Bryar Motorsport Park; Loudon, NH "Herald Traveler Challenge Trophy"
It seems to have been a replacement for Kwech who wrecked 628 at Donnybrooke

1109RWHP, thanks for posting that photo ! Rich, I have a couple of other pics from the same photo shoot of that car, they were I think from the Fran Hernandez site ? In the one profile shot I have you can see those are Torque Thrusts. By the time they started preseason tests at Michigan International they had the Daisy wheels, and you are right in that later in the season they switched to Minilites.
I will try and post a photo here, from Michigan and see if it works with the new system.
I think there was a separate thread before for Trans-Am cars ?

Mike (honker)

Thanks Mike,
I have that photo and the two others from the same day dated 5/11/69.
That seems late for testing when the first race of the season is also noted on the same day.

I can't recall a separate thread for the T/A cars

Thanks for posting!

I'm wondering if this is a vintage '69 photo or a pre season photo. The Shelby T/A car started out the season running those wide 5 spoke (daisy style?). They switched to Mini-lites (back and forth to the wide 5-spokes) throughout the season. I've never seen a photo at any race events with torque thrusts.

There was a Nightmist Blue GT500 at the "FT Lauderdale Car Auction" 1/6/2018.

I'm still trying to get the ID number. It may have been in the #2550's.

What was the result?

They didn't list it. Hopefully it will be added soon on that collector car website (I forget the name) that tracks auction results. If it is, I will post.
Here's a link to the photos and auction listing.

1967 GT500 #1262, stolen off the dealer lot in San Antonio, the thief's took the Hood and Front Nose off and replaced it w/ a regular production 1967 Mustang Hood and Nose.  To disguise the car, the thief's painted the entire car purple, over the badges, scoops, ect., that is why it is purple in the 1st picture from 1986.  The State of Texas recovered the car in 1968, bought at the State of Texas Auction in 1969, then it went to Oklahoma City.  Tee owner went to Ford and bought all the Shelby pieces available in 1970-1972, including the Hood and Front Nose, I used all the NOS parts gathered in the restoration.   I bought it from the original owner in 2002, fully restored in 2004, what fun it is to drive!

1969Redvert,
Would you be able to post a front and a rear view of #1262 . I'd like to see the grille light version and the taillight panel / rear valence version on your car.
Also car you post a rear view of #1927 for the same reason

Everyone,
If you would, please add you car number to your posts (if your willing to share)

Thanks,
Rich
