GT/CS - California Special / Re: GT/CS stripe colors ?
January 20, 2023, 09:02:41 PM
Thanks Jeff,
Specifying the pinstripes were painted on and listed on the Marti reports was helpful. Thanks for the photos too!
My previous replay should have stated that detail, but I did not think about it long enough.

I have seen the pinstripes noted on Marti reports.
Usually they are white or black, but on rare occasions I've seen painted stripes noted as red.

Did the California Special come with stripe colors other than white or black from the Ford factory?

White, black, red and a medium blue according to the Paul's book

Off the subject a little not sure of the available stripes for High Country or the Gold Nugget specials - the Calif Special's cousins that year and car production plant

Sometimes the Calif Specials were also ordered with the painted stripes on the side above the stick on ones. Those colors are coded into the information Kevin Marti has access to. Would expect that those stripes matched the original color of the stick on decal Calif Special stripes. They did on the ones I've owned that had the painted stripe option

How do we know if an owner changed the stripe color (from say white to black or visa versa)
Any paint / stripe color list info out there?

Might be called out/listed on the buildsheet. Haven't done a survey on the coding in the odd numbered boxes and compared them to the know original stripe color.

Thanks for the details Jeff.  The painted stripes are new to me. I've only heard about the stick on tape.
I have seen the white, black, and red striped HCS cars but never blue stripes.

I have been to the California Special website many times over the years and never saw a list for the paint with factoy stripe colors listed.
Recently there was a rare Pebble Biege CS with red stripes. that started me looking closer.

car build date is actually 4/12/67 and not march as I stated, I was mistaken that scheduled date was 3/20/67, sorry for confusion...

The car 'Imming1965' is working on was built at SJ 4/12/67    and completed by SAI 5/19/67

Just so I understand. Released date is not the completion date? Thanks.
I have seen the date in the registry.

Yes, this is an issues with the 1967 Shelby marti report. There should be some infomation to note the details and how to read them;
You are not the only person who reads this model year incorrectly

The Marti Report 'Important Dates" information is all based on the Ford records for 1967.
It is how the base / knockdown unit was built at Ford in San Jose, CA before Shelby touched the car.

It is NOT related to Shelby (SAI) dated information.
Those dates are later once the base unit is delivered to Shelby American in LA to be completed as a Shelby.

Just going by the Marti

Marti reports do not have the completion dates noted anywhere.
They only list the "Actually Built" date, at San Jose, CA (SJ). That is the knock down unit that was sent to SAI to complete.
Only a SAI "Production Order" or a SAAC registry will note the SAI "Completion" date.

My car completed March 23 1967.
Studs. Several photos if you would like

Your car was a knockdown unit sent by Ford SJ on 3/23/67
SAI completed it on 4/18/67.

The Shelby taillight assembly must be looked at for the SAI completion date.

#2928 may already be in the list. Just in case its not. DSO shows completion date of 6/7.Marti report shows it came with 6A trim.

Thanks Clarence,

Yes we have 2928 listed with the '6A' trim...THANK YOU for sharing that info.

Back in 1967, FORD Dealer names did not always include the FORD name in their title.
That name addition appears to have happened at a later time.

Currently, we believe;
'HI-Performance Motors' in El Segundo ...and
'Foreign Car Center' in Alabama...
were the only two dealers NOT part of the Ford Network to sell 1967 Shelby's.

We are charting the late build dates with the 5A and the 6A trim...

The SRG is still looking for all cars built in June and July, 1967, to confirm the trim used.
The DSO groups may be less relavant than the San Jose build dates.
More data is needed to confirm.

January 07, 2023, 01:42:40 PM
Did the California Special come with stripe colors other than white or black from the Ford factory?

I've seens some black and some various blue paint shades with gold stripes...
Also some white cars with red and with blue stripes.

How do we know if an owner changed the stripe color (from say white to black or visa versa)
Any paint / stripe color list info out there?

Very nice Kevin!
Welcome

I recently confirmed these were a 1 year only painted color for 2008 with only 215 coupes made

Do you happen to know how many of the 215 were upgaded to GT/SC versions?

Sharp CS Razor wheels.

Thanks for sharing this video JIM!!!!

It does appear to be taken around May 1964 before Shelby was involved in the GT40 program.

There were two separate Carroll Shelby owned dealerships.
They are believed to be owned and operated separately.

-The 1st dealership was on La Brea Avenue in Los Angeles.
It opened around 1964 and closed around late 1965.

-The 2nd dealership was on North Sepulveda Blvd in El Segundo
It opened around September 1965 and closed with LAX around late August 1967

Neither Shelby dealership was a FORD dealer.

The first CS dealership, (HPM1), was named and located as follows;
Carroll Shelby & Lew Spencer's
Hi-Performance Motors, Inc
1150 South La Brea Avenue
Los Angeles, 90019
(The four top people were Lew Spencer, Peyton Cramer, Al Dowd, and Tom Reese.)

The second CS dealership, (HPM2), was named and located as follows;
Carroll Shelby's
Hi-Performance Motors, Inc
901 North Sepulveda Blvd
El Segundo, CA

I discussed the details in depth with George Watters and Kieth Champine years ago.
For quick reference we called the first dealership 'HPM1' and the second 'HPM2'.
With their help, we determined the opening and closing date and there separate use.
Business cards from each dealer confirm the serparate names and addresses.

There appear to be many Shelby franchised dealers that were NOT a Ford Dealerships ...
An example is the Foreign Car Center in Birmingham, Alabama
