DeTomaso Pantera Targa – The Car Ford Should Have Made

Writing about DeTomaso is perilous for historians because the company's history is full of dark secrets (one great rumor is that DeTomaso bought Ghia for peanuts from a dictator's son when said son was in jail).

The DeTomaso Pantera's production numbers are not so cut and dried, like Ferraris. There is no expert the equal of the Ferrari world's Marcel Massini. It is known there were a handful of factory Targas made from Pantera GT5-S coupes, a car model made after DeTomaso and Ford parted ways.

The owner of this open car, Michael Elio, residing in the US, says only about 50 of the GT5-S coupes made it to the US... Of those, his is the only known Targa Pantera in North and South America. That was the 'gray market' era when private conversion shops would add what was needed to meet US laws.

Ironically today you don't have to have a GT5-S converted to meet US laws anymore due to the so-called 'Bill Gates law' where Bill Gates, coveting a non-conforming Porsche 959, got a law passed giving exemptions to imported non-conforming cars made in small numbers.

Elio's car has lettering on the side but no stripes and has about 26k miles on it. It is basically stock, except for a modern fuel injection system, and the wheels, which are Kinesis 18×11 front and 19×13 rear. The tires are Michelin Pilot Sports, 285/30 front, and 345/30 rear.

Elio goes on to say: "There were about 6 GT5-S Pavesi Targa Panteras made. There is also the prototype that was not originally a GT5-S, but was converted to one later... I'm not sure if that one is included in the 6. Add to that the 4 Si Pavesi Targas, and it seems there were about 10 or so Pavesi Targa Panteras made in total... that's all! The roof panel stores under the decklid. I just rest it across the trunk insert... it fits nicely there."

When DeTomaso began offering the Si, they had Windsor engines because they ran out of Clevelands. All of the 41 Si Panteras had 5.0L fuel injected Mustang motors in them.

Of those 41 Si Panteras, Mr. Elio states four were Pavesi Targas. Of those four, 2 had the only 6 speed (Getrag) transaxles that came in a Pantera from the factory. No factory Si Pantera has made it to the US. Pavesi is a well known coachbuilder in Italy, though now they mostly build commercial vehicles.

A good estimate of value could be made using the example of another Italian car (Iso Grifo) that came stock with a Chevy and later a Ford v8 — at that time sporting styling by Giugiaro. The fact that there is a larger number of Iso Grifo Targas compared to the Pantera Targa hasn't hurt them. Only fourteen Series I (open headlamp) Iso Grifo Targas were made and only four series II (closed headlamp) Targas were built. Of course over 7000 Panteras were made compared to only 402 Iso Grifos in total so overall, Isos are a much rarer brand. An Iso Grifo Targa could still bring more than a Pantera Targa because the general public doesn't know the build quality of the cut Panteras and doesn't know of the firm Pavesi.

When I asked Mr. Elio the value of the car he reported that GT5-S Pantera coupes are fast approaching the $300k mark, with one recently selling for $273k! The rarity of GT5-S Panteras in general puts an owner of one in a very exclusive club, but to own a Pavesi Targa Pantera puts you in a league of your own. In terms of numbers produced, the factory Pantera Targas number about the same as the factory Pantera race cars, making them quite rare and valuable!

Michael Elio is estimating his open Pantera to be worth upwards of $500k. It is currently for sale, and Mr. Elio can be reached at: cyboman@rocketmail.com for further details.

I was writing bout the Ferrari 410 spyder that RM Sothebys is putting up for auction at Monterey  next month. Shelby won more than 10 races in it, while it was owned by his sponsor John Edgar. i vaguely remember when Shelby and  Mr. Hall (brother of Jim Hall) had that sports car store in Dallas, reading a rumor of a dirty unwashed ferrari that they put a Chevy V8 into? Anybody know what model it was or what happened to it?
I doubt it was the auction car. by the way the Shelby connection with the auction car is so str0ng they are giving away a trophy Shelby won while racing it The picture here is of the car when Shelby raced it. It might go for $20-25 million.

I heard John Clinard, long time Ford PR man,  announce on the KPFK -FM radio show about cars that Ford will pave the way for several vintage Ford GTs to be on display at Laguna Seca this August at the meet. Anybody know which cars? Will any veteran LeMans Ford GTs actually be running in the vintage race? What day are the mid-'60s cars running? Or practicing? Porsche is going to have a 917 there so my dream would be to have an ex-LeMans Porsche racer and former Ford GT racer do a mano-a-mano duel during the weekend with some original veterans in original cars. (Though I  might have to concede a bit as the driver would have to be in their 70s to have raced in the mid-60s.)Here's the list of run groups.

Run groups for the event are as follows:

1923-1955 Le Mans
1956-1971 Le Mans
1972-1982 Le Mans
Le Mans Prototypes (1981-2005)
1966-1972 Historic Trans-Am
1966-1985 Historic Formula 1
1958-1963 Formula Junior
1955-1969 Saloon
1955-1966 SCCA Sports Cars
1981-1991 IMSA GTO, Trans Am
1974-1979 Formula Atlantic
1920-1955 Grand Prix

Us Ford GT fans need to know what day is the '56 to '71 class practicing and what day racing? For grins

I had a DeTomaso book by Dalton but it had mislabeled pictures but maybe that was earlier and by the time they got to the Cobra books, they had better editing. Not clear if this ad was for one book or three but anyhow total was over 1000 pages. The one book was Shelby Cobras: CSX 2001–CSX 2125 The Definitive Chassis-by-Chassis History of the Mark I Production Cars advertised as a hardcover in Amazon for $250. So how much for the whole set of three?

https://vintagemotorsport.com/2020/07/10/video-exclusive-shelby-memorabilia-atzbach-collection-july-10-18-mecum-indy-auction/

I was originally looking for the list to see what any Shelby-related paintings sold for but couldn't find it.But at least the interview shows how far Atzbach went to collect his memorabilia--often buying directly from original Shelby employees. This 289 racer painting by Michael Holmes might have been part of the sale. There's an estimate for $2000-3000  but couldn't find sales price.

from their announcement:
This year's car show highlighting the cars of Carroll Shelby and how they influenced the industry of their era. As a requirement for participation in this show your vehicle must be a product from Shelby's design, manufacturing, or a replica of those products.

Thank you for pre-registering with our Charity Car Show that benefits the Warrior Foundation Freedom Station here in San Diego. Your Pre-registration guarantees you an assigned parking stall, in your "car class". The placement of cars in the parking lot will be car, car, space, car, car, space and so on giving enough room to sit near your car. The day of the show, Registration will be open at around 7:00am, since your space is reserved, you need not arrive before then. If you choose to come before 7:00am, we simply won't be ready for you. Please arrive no later than 8:30am so we can get everyone parked where they belong and start the show at 9:00am. We will strive to get everyone parked quickly, but if there is a large crowd ahead of you, you are going to wait. We appreciate your patience. If your car tends to overheat, pull out of line and wait for the line to thin out. Remember there is a stall with your name on it!

Should you decide to bring a vehicle other than the one you registered, please let me know before May 27. By (8:00pm). We hope you can make it to the show, but if for some reason you are unable to attend, please don't expect us to refund your registration fee, or allow a friend to enter in your place. The ad dates back to  Dec. 17, 2021.I am trying to find out, was this a one time sell-off or is this offer continuing?  Has  anyone dealt with this dealer before? There was a picture with the ad of three racing Cobras but I don't know if this is the advertisers own collection or at some event.I recognized Bondurant and Bill Neale, the famous artist. among the half dozen people posing with the race cars

Peter Dinklage, Channing Tatum To Produce 10-Part Drama About The 1960s Ford, Ferrari Racing Rivalry
By Aaron Brzozowski

Actor Peter Dinklage, who portrays Tyrion Lannister on the popular HBO series Game of Thrones, will join with actor Channing Tatum (Magic Mike, 21 Jump Street) to produce a 10-part dramatic series about Ford's bitter motorsport feud with Ferrari during the 1960s. The forthcoming series, which is entitled "Driven", was announced by IM Global Television at the annual Mipcom trade show in Cannes, France, Malay Mail Online reports.

The subject is a story that we motoring enthusiasts know all too well. Henry Ford II, rebuffed by Enzo Ferrari during the advanced stages of a proposed buyout deal in 1963, launched a program to humiliate Ferrari where it mattered most: the racetrack. Ford's sights set on the legendary 24 Hours of Le Mans endurance race, the program spawned the Ford GT40 – a sleek, low-slung sportscar with a mid-mounted V8 engine, based on a chassis from Lola Cars.

Initially unsuccessful in the FIA World Sportscar Championship, the Ford GT40 program was eventually turned over to Carroll Shelby, which led to the GT40 Mk II – the car that would make history. In 1966, with Henry Ford II in attendance, the Mk II finally beat Ferrari to win the 24 Hours of Le Mans, claiming all three spots on the podium for good measure. The Ford GT40 would go on to win the race each of the following three years, as well.

According to Malay Mail Online, Zak Schwartz (Human Target, Covert Affairs) will write the Driven series. It's unknown whether Peter Dinklage or Channing Tatum will appear on-screen during the 10-part drama.

Last year, a documentary exploring Ford's Le Mans rivalry with Ferrari entitled "The 24 Hour War" was released, followed this year by The Return –
a documentary about Ford's return to the renowned endurance race in 2016, fifty years after its first win there. The period in motorsport history was the subject of A.J. Baime's 2009 book Go Like Hell.

Here's a story about an AC Mk, III which is the Brit version A.C.  made with big block chassis and body but small block engine. It was , for a short time, the owner's tribute to psychedelic art, but then with the owner's sudden death,  the Beatles wrote a song about him and it became a tribute to the deceased until it was painted over.
