I replaced the dash pad in the mid 70's, and do not think 550 came with spacers under the tach. I say that due to the tach base being pulled way down into the dash pad. Ron

Thanks Jeff, That shows me what the screw heads look like, and how the spacers are almost as thick as the dash pad. I'll have to find some spacers at the hardware store, or fabricate some out of copper tubing. Ron

1966 Shelby GT350/GT350H / Tach mounting screws
May 12, 2018, 11:32:23 AM
Just wondering about the screws, and metal standoffs used to mount the tach in a '66 Hertz. I installed a new dash pad back in the mid 70's, and do not remember any of the tubular spacers going thru the pad under the tach. The tach had pulled way down into the old dash pad, so don't think it had the spacers. I would really appreciate pics of the screws, and spacers. I'm going to install my tach tomorrow. I just got it back from being restored by Phil. Thanks in advance.  Ron

I would have to say that it has given me the opportunity to meet many people that I would never have met. I bought 6S550 in Aug. 1967, and still have it. I drive it usually at least once a week, even though I live in Colorado. Back in 1976, while living in Mississippi, I met Mark Smith, and many local Shelby owners down there. Back in about 2009, I met Ray Tharp, of Des Moines, Iowa, because he wanted to ask a question about the car. He owns 6S554. I consider him a lifelong friend, even though I was 66 when I first met him.  When I'm out for a ride in 550, I always get thumbs up, and people following me to where ever I'm going, to talk cars, and look the car over.  It's a nice driver, and always gets a lot of attention. I'm running a diaphram clutch in 6s550, and did not remove the spring under the dash. Been running it for years with no problems. My only problem is that the clutch pedal does not come up all the way when the clutch is released. Ron

When we were in Ibiza , we saw a red '66 convertible and our first trip to Aruba, there was a '65 or '66 bright yellow convertible on the side of the road, as we were heading back to the ship.

Wanted to Buy / Re: 65/66 Front sway bar

Tony Branda may have one. I sold one to him a couple of years ago, if he hasn't sold it. Ron

I bought 550 in 1967, and it had no I D ring on the transfer tube. I've still got that master cylinder, although it has a big hole in it, from a clutch explosion back in 1983. Ron

550's Mico was bare cast iron, no paint.

The Lounge / Re: Stories regarding 427 or 289 cobras.

In 1967, I was looking to buy a '66 Shelby(GT350), and test drove one at Richardson Ford in Albuquerque , Nm. As we walked thru the show room, to the salesman's office we walked by a 67 Cobra. The salesman said "How about I sell you this one". I asked the price, and he said $5,000. My words to him were"I don't want one of those damn foreign cars, I want a Shelby." Ron

Looking Back / Re: SAAC4 June 28 - 30, 1979

Can anyone identify two of the guys in the photo of the gold GT. The one on the left, without shirt looks like Mark Smith, and the third one to his right looks like George Paul, to me. I know that they were there for this convention. Ron
