Thanks everyone for the detailed responses.  I will check into the brass inserts.  They look like a better option.

Is that possible without removing tail light panel? I didn't think they were serviceable.  Are they?

1969-1970 Shelby GT350/500 / Tail Lamp Screws
« on: September 09, 2019, 12:00:16 PM »
So a prior owner drilled out the stripped inserts for the stock screws in my tail light panel on my 69 Shelby.  They also used longer machine screws and a nut on the back side.  I don't feel like removing the tail light panel to fix this the right way.  Does anyone know if a screw exists that looks correct on the visible side, but will accept a nut on the back side where nobody can see it?  If so, could you tell me the size specs on this screw and nut so I can buy some?  Thanks.

Pretty sure the large black wire with yellow stripe goes to shelby console gauge harness.  There are 2 harness for console gauges, 1 under dash and another one in engine bay.

Thanks to all; tomorrow I’m going to block off his PCV. Valve and drive it some? How far to realize if it’s changed? 3 miles? or? ; I wish I had leak down tools but I will run his compression in each cylinder and hopefully not any too different or low ! After all we’ve read here; the third will be an inspection of the intake manifold gaskets if the others check out ok ? Opinions??!

If you have someone follow behind in another car, you should know right away.  If you smell oil in exhaust or see smoke, it will be easy to detect.  It is possible the compression rings are sealing pretty well so your compression and leak down results could be ok, and it still may smoke.  I did all of these tests, and paid for a borescope test as well.  All were inconclusive, but it kept smoking and consuming oil.  I also pulled and resealed my intake, but that wasn't the main problem.  In the end, the engine came back out for re-hone and re-ring.  Good luck.  I hope you fare better than I did.

I bypassed my Shelby and XR7.  The Pink wire is fed from the tach plug.  It is a two way plug.. one male.. one female.  Just unplug that connector, rotate the plug 180' so the pink feed wire is exposed.  Then run a wire from that connector right out to the coil.  Use a larger gauge wire to handle the load. Tape up the connection so that plug you rotated stays in place.   No cutting required.  I might have pics somewhere.. it is easy.. except removing the dash to get to the wiring.  Mark

It worked!  Full 12 volts to coil and pertronix.  Brilliant idea.  Not the way I wanted to spend 4 hours today, but it is done and fixed.  Thanks.

I've been using a AGM reproduction autolite battery for 7 years, and it is still working great.  They aren't cheap at $350, but work great if you keep a trickle charger on them in winter.  Virginia mustang provided mine.

I had the same exact problem happen to me.  I ended up giving the engine to a different shop to fix since I did not have confidence in them any longer.  Turned out my cylinder hone was too smooth,  and the intake was sucking oil at bottom due to inadequate gasket pinch.

I feel the 1st shop would have duplicated the same errors a 2nd time.

Thanks! That sounds like an excellent idea.   Will try it.

1969-1970 Shelby GT350/500 / Pink resistor wire
« on: August 02, 2019, 04:31:29 PM »
I've confirmed my resistor wire is functioning and my pertronix coil is only getting 5.6 volts.  Does anyone know if the pink resistor wire under the dash on a 69 shelby has a removable bullet connector?  I want to bypass resistor and get 12 volts to coil without splicing into OEM wires.   Any ideas? Thanks

Nice car, but the off-center stripe on the side marker light ruins it for me.   De-stripe and try again.  This isn't a Pinto.

The GT350/500 should be centered in the scoop of the front fender and extends in a straight line all of the way back to the rear quarter where the wide part of the stripe splits the rear marker light opening.
+1...
I can't understand why so many people the marker light with the center stripe, but it seems more people miss the mark than hit it.  :-[

+1. It is hard to look at when I see a perfectly restored 69/70 shelby with the stripe nowhere close to the center of the rear marker light.  Such a shame.
