SAAC Forum Discussion Area / Re: Electrical Help

I flipped my tach connector around and ran a dedicated black wire the to pertronix to bypass the pink resistor wire.  Its been working.  See thread link below.

Wow, what a sad story.

There are several dots not connected, however.

Was the owner of the car of sound mind when he sold it to Craig?

Was the car ever stored in Riverside?

There may be 100 valid reasons why the owner didn't want the car to stay in the family.

Number 99 has an interesting history that includes the death of the owner in a motorcycle crash, a falsified will by the widow, and a lengthy estate battle between the widow and 3 children who were left with $1 each.  It was tied up in the court so long I gave up on it.

Yes. He was trying to title skip Nevada and called me at midnight once.  He said he had a bad night "at the tables" and needed me to wire $5k immediately if I wanted the car.  I told him to keep the car and not to call me again.

A few weeks later I was talking to Bret about something else and told him the story about a really good car owned by a difficult person. Bret said, I am good at dealing with difficult people and I can get it for you, which he did.

I guess the point is that sometimes when you don't get the holy grail, you end up with something even better.

I'm still trying to understand the point of the entire post? What is this all about?

I think it's the story about a Hanging Chad.  :D

Im guessing it is about a Shelby that got away from someone with a strong history and attachment to the car.  That happened to me with a 69 convertible gt350 I first saw in 1979.  I posted a wanted ad for a dash pad in the Pittsburgh press.  A respondent said I have one, but you have to remove it from the car.  Low and behold, it is in Shelby number 99, and the owner was installing factory ac.  I was 15 and putting a tach dash and cluster in my 70 Mach 1.  I had never seen a Shelby before, but I was hooked after seeing a red on white convertible.

I tried to buy the car over the next 30 years but without success.  Finally, I am at a Boy Scouts popcorn function and a guy is talking about a red Shelby convertible recently sold.  I get the contact info and spend 2 years trying to buy it from a dealer near Pittsburgh.  I offered up to 130k for the car that was disassembled and had a replacement fender apron. I didn't care that I was paying above market. I acted as an advisor on the shops restoration of the car, and it was judged at saac34 beaver run.  They kept raising the price and it seemed like they were trying to gouge me because of my attachment.

I decided to look for another Shelby convertible.  A week later, my car #100, shows up on eBay.  That's right, 1 number off from my holy grail car.  Bret went out to Vegas and wrangled the car for me.
My car turned out to be a rust free California black plate car with original drivetrain that matched.  And as an added bonus, it was $40k less, and didn't need putting together.

Restored by Dave Topper.  Selling for what I have invested in it.  $3,500.

I can deliver it to the SAAC convention in a few weeks.

I have been running a dead nuts on alternator for 11 years without any problems.  However it is only 55amps and didn't charge at idle speed.

Summit sells the tuff stuff alternators.  They also make excellent starters.

Often, the alternator doesn't charge the battery at idle speed.  The alternators in the link below work well and have a smaller pulley that allows charging at idle.  The OEM length belt wasn't too long and adjusted just fine.  Made in ohio and under $100.

CSX 3000 Series / Re: Ethanol, gas
June 25, 2023, 09:25:28 PM
Using Earls vapor guard EFI hose even on carburetor equipped cars will help.  It's rated for E85 and 225psi.  Regular rubber fuel hose allows gasoline vapors to stink up your garage if using ethanol fuel.

Not sure if it is the best, but my LED kit from Vic Yarberry is very good and has worked for over 5 years.

My Sniper EFI just failed and needs a new oxygen sensor driver and ECU.  My car started randomly stalling and I barely made it home.  I'm switching back to a carburetor.  EFI gave me 5 good years but I no longer trust it on my Shelby.

Tony's video makes several good points.  He's right about the heat from mechanical fuel pumps being attached to a 220 degree engine block being mostly the cause for high fuel temperatures.  The problem is that storing 6 to 12 ounces of E10 fuel in the carb's fuel bowls just doesn't work without percolation.  The boiling point of ethanol fuel is too low.  With 58 psi of fuel pressure and no fuel storage on top of the heat sink, percolation and vapor lock is not a problem with EFI.

I couldn't solve percolation problems with a carb because my 351w has high performance mods that cause increased heat.  My gt350 feels like a gt500 based upon the ease of being able to spin both tires for 25 feet with half throttle from a dead stop with an FMX. I owned a 68 KR for 21 years with a well tuned cobra jet and my gt350 is almost as powerful as the KR was.  My car runs way better with EFI.

Many do have problems if they have the ECU control timing with the hyperspark distributor, which is prone to rfi/EFI.  I stuck with my autolite distributor with pertronix and it works great with my factory tach. Fuel percolation and vapor lock is eliminated even with low boiling temps of E10 fuel.  Holley quality control on the sniper is poor currently based on what I read in the sniper forums. My 5 year old unit has been great.

Love my sniper EFI.  I've had it for 5 years and it is the best mod I ever made to any classic car.  If you have a marginal engine with vacuum leaks or an exhaust leak you will have lots of trouble with EFI.  If you don't install it properly and don't know what AFR means, stick with the 100 year old carb technology.  If you want perfection with cold start and throttle response, EFI might be for you.

Auto insurance for daily drivers is very expensive as well. 1 in 4 drivers here are uninsured.  Many have never had a driver license according to local police blotters.  The car gets impounded and they receive a NTA (notice to appear).
