Jeff

Was curious because Randy G make the comment "The entire assembly was built and then "final balance" was "adjusted" during the "run test" EVERY engine got before shipping to an assembly plant". That statement got my interest up.

So engine was started and if it was within some vibration specs, it was sent to installation. If it failed, it was send somewhere else...

Am curious how the "final balance" was "adjusted" during the "run test" which EVERY engine got before shipping to an assembly plant. Surely didn't alter crank or rods. So without pulling pan off completed engine, only thing to modify would be balance er or flywheel.
Since all HiPo 289 engines were not standard shift, how did they balance engine destines for automatic transmission?

Ideally, machine shop would gather all the rotating components and balance the complete rotating assembly. But, if needed to replace a balancer or a flywheel on an existing engine, could use a balancer or flywheel from another engine as long as the components were identical and were within the window of balance.

When Ford balanced the 65 HiPo 289 rotating assembly, did they (Ford) include the flywheel and the thick balancer/hatchet, in the balance? I assume the balance excluded the balancer/hatchet and flywheel as those could be replaced during life of the engine without requiring a rebalance.

Thanks in advance

I will bite for one set. If you have any extra primary wires, could use 2 more.
Thanks Tim

So from your Judging perspective in Concours class, flange and muffler were typically black, unless there is some evidence showing car as delivered, had something different. Side pipes should be black, but could be natural without a deduction.
I will send Jess that photo and leave it at that. Interesting discussion at least.

Appears pipes were shipped "natural" as well as painted black. Bo's (Texas Suede) picture shows side pipes as natural with the intermediate pipes black. Jesse at Shelby Parts and Restoration said his experience was that if intermediate pipes were black, so were the side pipes. Would venture to say there were some cars that had the intermediate pipes one coating with side pipes another. Suspect a Judge would not "ding" you if painted intermediate and side pipes or left them natural or mix and match...I was told the intermediate pipes were not welded to the flanges until after the "mufflers" and side pipes were properly positioned. Then, spot welds were done to the flange before they were removed and welded all way around. Lot or processes were evolving at SA. Can easily imagine painting tailpipes might have been one of those that evolved...

Hard to tell from Bo's picture to see if the intermediate, muffler and long pies were black or some combination. What would be considered correct for a Mar-Apr numbered car?

Any idea of original tail pipe diameter?

Assume both tail pipes were same length and bent identically? Meaning there wasn't a left and right side tail pipe?

Does the SA manual indicate what degree exhaust tips were cut at? Appears something other than a right angle.

Believe Bob Mannels book says to set points in a 65 dual point distributor to .019-.021 which should result in 30-33 degrees of dwell. If you blocked one set of points (A) and adjusted other (B) to 26 degrees dwell, moved block from A and moved it to B, then set dwell on A to 26 degrees, total dwell should be between 30-33 degrees when blocks removed. Would think dwell meter would be much more accurate than a feeler gauge. Thoughts?
