What do you use to clean the engine after the Dyno run-in and before paint? Denatured alcohol?

All early Shelby's should have the VIN stamping . Those that don't generally have some "story" as to how theirs is the exception, blah blah blah......

FWIW,  a VIN Stamped engine block is only an indication of originality, NOT proof f anything.  Many people think nothing about having replacement blocks stamped during an overhaul or restoration.  Done by an experienced person, a subsequent block stamping cannot be told from an original one.

So buyer beware, don't pay extra for a meaningless stamp, without other substantiating evidence that the block / engine is original.

I am reminded of this article from Hemming;

https://www.hemmings.com/magazine/mus/2008/08/Just-a-Second---1968-Chevrolet-Camaro-Z-28/1676538.html

I am amazed just how many performance cars from the 60's are now all numbers matching with all original parts and just one repaint.    ::)

I found this old photo on the internet.  Not sure which car it is. Looks black to me.

I recognized that picture from this article;

There's a really simple answer that I can't believe you're all missing:

May have to do that if you pay the asking.

Not saying the car isn't worth saving   ::)

Depending on how long it was in Portland, OR (registry states it sold in Portland at Ron Tonkin Auto Sales), there definitely could be "Minimal Rust".   The rain in Western Oregon is not good on cars.  I agree a personal inspection would be best before committing to this car based on the lack of detail photos in the auction.

I hope someone gets it and shares progress with us here.

They still salt roads in Washington state. They are going back to salt after using urea (also nasty) as it is a natural product.

The GAA engine ( like Scott has) is NOT the same as in the photoshopped image. The GAA is a HUGE engine that dwarfs a Boss 9 or cammer . There were internet pictures of one installed in a '69 Mustang and it looked more like a Hot Wheels car with the huge engine bulging out of the engine compartment. I've seen Scott's engine in person and it really is BIG.

Thanks to all for the responses. I am a newbie to the forum so here is a little background. My wife is the original owner or the car. She used it to commute to work as an elementary school teacher and administrator for about 10 years. I have been a recreational "shade tree" mechanic for most of my life, mostly working on Little British Cars.

This story sounds very familiar. Was your guy's story published in Mustang Monthly or similar?

BTW; Welcome.

$35 to $40K for Paint & Body?  Wow, How many Naps, Smoke Breaks and Monkeying around are you paying for?

Paint starts at $25,000 in my area too.

And that is on a super nice specimen that you brought to them perfectly disassembled, cleaned and ready to go.

Of course, I am not talking about production facilities doing insurance repairs.

Very interesting write-up.    :o

Tires look like Avon 245/60's. I like them.

The car is worth saving, no doubt.

But even if you are doing as a hobbyist, it is nice to know you aren't in a hole too deep as you write check after check.
