Concours Talk / Re: Reproduction Group 24 Battery
« on: September 11, 2020, 03:09:33 PM »
First report,     Received battery no shipping damage and fully charged. One difference from the past reproduction battery is the raised AUTOLITE script on the top isnt colored red. Identical in color as battery case. Otherwise no other external difference.

I also purchased a turbostart repop battery after reading this thread. The Delco branded Exide battery I had just didnt quite look right. I also got a new Battery Tender to hopefully avoid any issues.

If you have underides, I use a block of wood straddling the front mount where it lays flat against the sub frame. I also wrap the wood with a shop towel to prevent damage to paint or coatings.

No substitute for hands on mechanical repair. Way better than just handing it off to a shop.

I was just wondering during the crank no start condition did it want to pop back through the carb or want to stop abruptly? Or did it just sound normally just no start?

If you are saying that you can physically spin the dist rotor and the dist shaft rotates also, then yes pull the unit out and look at the gear on the shaft. I think a previous post noted a possible rollpin issue. I dont think a detached drive gear would fall off the shaft but just be gentle when pulling the dist out.

How about a air rifle with night scope. No reason why this cant be fun. I have picked off a few mice with a 1966 Crosman M1. Effective  but only close range accuracy.

I like the Tom Cat snap traps. Bait with some peanut butter and place somewhere like behind a water heater. Dont worry they will find it. Deadly and reusable.

So you have presumably eliminated fuel or spark as the problem so next  put a compression tester on it and see what pressure reading is. I cant imagine the piston not moving but you can carefully insert a wooden dowel or something similar into the plug bore and slowly turn the crankshaft by hand. When #1 piston is at the top of its travel check the timing marks on the dampener to see if at TDC. Then check to see if dist rotor is pointing exactly at # 1 on the cap. Might be 180 out so rotate crankshaft one time and recheck if necessary. I think the crank bolt is 15/16. Also when viewing the marks on the dampener rotate the crankshaft both directions and make note of how many degrees of movement free travel to see condition of timing chain. Just a process of elimination is all. Report back with your findings.

Theres nothing like the sound of a Merlin or a big Wright Cyclone radial. I had a B25, navy Corsair, and a P51 fly low formation over my house once and it knocked my socks off.

Thats the spirit, and your less than ten years prediction has prompted me to dust off some Chevys starting tomorrow. Its a feel good thing and it makes me happy.

We are in a transition period currently. Electric vehicles will inevitably displace gasoline power. The manufacturers are increasing battery range and lowering recharge time. Gasoline will eventually phase out like steam power no denying it. Right now we have low gas prices to enjoy our toys but for how long? In Illinois the wind farms have exploded between Bloomington and the Wisconsin border. The UAE peace deal is a realization in the middle east of whats coming. Our coal here in central Illinois comes from Wyoming (low sulphur) and is scrubbed at huge expense. We may look back at this time and regret we didnt drive our cars more. Tell me Im wrong. I just dont know how long it will take to change over completely. My magic 8 ball isnt reliable.

A few years back I was offered 40K cash at a local car show for my 66. He thought it looked correct to him. Turned out it was the first real Shelby he ever saw and apologized. No harm no foul. I gave him a on site tutorial to avoid  future embarrassments on first gen cars.
