We all know that CS first approached GM for Corvette engines to drop into the AC. Is this the reason he went there first?

Scaglietti Corvette

In 1959, a Texan oil well drilling contractor named Gary Laughlin wondered if it would be possible to create a vehicle with Italian design characteristics using the chassis and engine components from an American car like the Corvette. To oversee this creation, he enlisted the help of car constructer Jim Hall and race car driver Carroll Shelby, whom he was good friends with, to assist with the engineering of the project and, after their efforts, each man was to receive their own Corvette custom made to their liking. Thus, the trio managed to get three rolling Corvette chassis off of the production line and arranged to have them shipped to Modena, Italy. There, with the help of Road & Track correspondent Pete Coltrin, they managed to get in touch with Italian coachbuilder Sergio Scaglietti, famous for his design work on Ferrari road cars at the time. Scaglietti agreed to create and fit a new lightweight aluminium body to each car in secret, as Enzo Ferrari reportedly threatened to cancel Scaglietti's partnership with him after learning of the project. The resulting Scaglietti Corvette ended up weighing roughly 400 lbs less than any other Corvette at the time.
Each of the three cars assembled were unique for each owner:
Car #1, originally for Laughlin, was finished in red. It used a slightly different body to accommodate for an existing Corvette front grille. It originally came with a 283 cu in V8 with 315 hp and a four-barrel carburetor, mated to a 2-speed automatic transmission.
Car #2, originally for Hall, was finished in blue. This version had a body more closely resembling the Ferrari 250 GT Berlinetta LWB. It came with the same carbureted V8 and automatic transmission as Car #1.
Car #3, originally for Shelby, was finished in red. This model was somewhat unique as though it used a similarly designed body to Car #2, it was the only model fitted with fuel-injection and a Borg-Warner 4-speed manual transmission. Unlike the other two members of the project, Shelby never took delivery of his car, citing that it was too expensive for his purposes for it.
However, the Scaglietti Corvette was not without its issues. Though conceived in 1959, the final projects wouldn't be completed and shipped back to the US until 1961, by which time it became clear that the aluminum bodies, though much lighter, had caused dramatic effects to the Corvette's chassis, resulting in dangerous front end lift at high speeds. Coupled with legal pressure from General Motors and Enzo Ferrari to put an end to production, and the Scaglietti Corvette project would be forever cemented as only a concept. However, many ideas from the car would prove inspirational, leading Jim Hall to found his Chevrolet-powered Chaparral racing team and Carroll Shelby to revisit the idea of a European-American sports car with the AC Cobra.

Ford's top boss, CEO Jim Farley, said Thursday that the company will "think carefully" about where it builds future vehicles following the United Auto Workers (UAW) strike.

In a statement to The Associated Press, UAW President Shawn Fain argued that Ford should "find a CEO who's interested in the future of this country's auto industry."
"Maybe Ford doesn't need to move factories to find the cheapest labor on Earth," he said. "Maybe it needs to recommit to American workers."

Progressives spent last year torturing home cooks by threatening gas stoves and dishwashers in pursuit of energy efficiency. Now the climate brigade is going after drivers. A new bill in Washington state would give regulators the ability to ban tires that create a drag on fuel efficiency.

The proposal would give the state Department of Commerce authority to prevent the sale of replacement tires that the state says have too much "rolling resistance," which decreases the fuel efficiency of the vehicles.

Washington has a rare triple whammy here in a bill that would limit consumer options, make tires more expensive and make drivers less safe. It underscores how progressives are using climate as an excuse to intervene in nearly every corner of the U.S. economy.

ACalifornia Democrat introduced bill this week that would require automakers in the state to equip new vehicles with speed governors — devices that restrict how fast people can drive.

The technology, if passed under the legislation, would prevent California drivers from going 10 mph or more over the posted speed limit in any given area. The bill would mandate that cars and trucks of the 2027 model year or later that are manufactured or sold in California be installed with speed governors.

Ford said on Thursday 12-21-23 that half of all 1,550 Ford dealers chose to sell electric vehicles in 2024—down from two-thirds that said this time last year that they would opt in to sell EVs for 2023.

Currently, taxpayers only pay capital gains tax when they sell an asset. This plan would create a "mark to market" regime, forcing Americans to pay taxes every year on the gain in the value of assets like stocks, collectibles, and real estate.
In order to enforce this tax, the IRS would have to be given vast new powers to value the assets of taxpayers. This would be an extremely invasive and difficult task. The agency would have to keep detailed lists of assets of items like jewelry, art, baseball cards, and more.

It is really stirring up the hot rod and custom car scene over here.
It's a shocker, especially for those of us who love to tweak and customize our rides.

Here's what's happening: The EU wants to change the rules about what counts as a "historic vehicle." And it's not just a small tweak – it's a big deal that could hit our community hard. Under this new rule, to keep your car classified as historic, you need to meet three tough conditions: It's got to be at least 30 years old, its model type can't be in production anymore, and it must be preserved in its original state without major changes. That's right – all those custom modifications that give our cars their unique character could disqualify them.

But wait, it gets even more serious. Extensive restoration projects, parts cars, and even private parts sales could pretty much become illegal with this directive as it stands. And if your car ever gets de-registered or taken off the road, it's automatically considered an End of Life Vehicle (ELV). That means you've got to take it to an approved recycling station without unreasonable delay.

The new rules also say that national authorities will have to check every time a car changes hands. They'll decide if it's just a regular used car or an ELV. If it's an ELV, the transfer is blocked, and you guessed it – off to recycling it goes.
