I believe that the body-in-white was rare, but  a real thing. I know of a 1969 BIW that was built into a 1969 Shelby. It was assigned a state serial number.

In my previous career as a Ford parts manager, we often needed complete body assemblies to repair wrecks. These were ordered as a part thru FoMoCo Parts & Service Div, like pickup cabs & boxes. However they were not unitized serialized bodies like Mustangs so the VIN was not affected. We also sold complete "cab in white" for Ford Louisville semi trucks for a trucking company that hauled new Fords from the assembly plants in Detroit. Ther refurbished the used & rusted trucks with the BIW cabs.

I suspect the Mustang BIW were "managed" orders thru a FoMoCo district manager or direct thru a program ( special vehicle racing ) manager.

It's interesting P1005 is now vintage racing.

The photos were on the GT40 forum.
This appears to align with the reports of the burned chassis due to a garage fire was left to sink into a river bank.

I believe chassis #1127 was used to "restore" this car.

Ouch! Does that car have a unique grill opening? It looks like half way between a 289 and a 427 nose? Ned?

That is odd!

That oval grille opening appeared as early as November '64 at the Nassua speed weeks. The only earlier photo I have in my files is from Sebring in March. It shows a normal 289 nose.

The lights on the roll bar are pit ID lights

here's a better look at the nose.

Kranky,
I don't recognize the track, since it's mixed classes I assume it a local or regional race?

With the AMX / Javlin I would thing no sooner than 1968.

#18 has unique side pipes & it's A/P so a street / semi comp CSX3xxx car converted to race?

Any ideas as to race & car ID's?

thanks

Looks like a non-running design exercise.

That is a clay styling design model covered in Nyloc to simulate a painted surface.
taken in Ford's Styling Studio sometime around Nov ~ Dec 1965.

photo #1 & 2 are also in the Ford Design Studio, same clay model, #3 is J-1 build at Kar Kraft.

Yes, the same car. Color reproduction on 39 year old negatives sketchy at best. That's Larry in the jean jacket behind the car at the Utica test track in your picture.

John,
The banking is evident in my photo, I didn't get more than 1/2 way up at 110 mph in 6S283.
Larry un-corked the side pipes and really opened up CSX2550, the 1st time I heard a small block cobra at full throttle,
I don't know what speed he hit on that track but he was really moving.

The only regret was XGT-3 was taken around at a leisurely pace, I would have loved hearing that 7 liters wide open,
I do remember it didn't like to idle under 2,000~2,500 rpm.

Thanks for the photos

This is CSX2550, it is what I think of when I think of a Cobra.

John,
I believe CSX2550 is the same car present at the MCR group at 1977 Carnival of Cars at the Packard Proving Grounds.
The red paint shows up different in this photo.
XGT-3  (#3) is alongside with Don Eichstead standing behind the MK-II.

Well I cancelled my piano lesson for Saturday.  Rachmaninoff's G sharp minor Prelude will have to wait.  Seems my brain is set on autopilot to lead me to Traverse City.  I will take a lot of pictures to post should I choose to accept the mission.  Better pack my automotive prayer mat.

If you're going up I-196 & US 131 I assume you'll see lake effect snow, no tire chain stations like out west!
They're calling for 2-4" Fri ~ Sat.

Also if anyone missed this newstory out of the Detroit North American International Auto Show:

Raj Nair, President of Ford North America and the man who spearheaded the GT project and Ford's return to Le Mans, today placed a Gurney tribute on the flanks of the Ford GT gracing the automaker's stand at the Detroit Auto Show.

Every manufacturer builds some good cars, and some bad.
Vega, Pinto, rusty Honda's......

However Ford took the tough road and didn't take government bailout $'s,
I have family members that got shafted in the GM bonds that were turned to worthless paper in violation of 200 yrs of US bankruptcy law.
I'm not trying to go into political issues, just that there was a decision to take a very different path out.
I'll give Ford props for not following the herd.

Great read is Alan Mulally's book ! " American Icon: Alan Mulally and the Fight to Save Ford Motor Company"

Does anyone know the approximate Ford vin of the earliest fastbacks that were built. I have a friend, who's vin ends in 154081, I think. I might be missing a 0 in the middle. I think when San Jose started Mustang production, they started with 100001, but since fastbacks started much later, there were a lot of Mustangs already built. His car has some odd features, and he has been told it was a very early fastback. Thanks for any help with this. Ron

Earliest Dearborn, San Jose or Metuchen fastback?
