Hello Everyone,
A few years back I bought a pair of 31 spline for 9" axles so I could use them in a 70Boss I had but ended up finding the originals buried in my garage. Every once in awhile I think about using them in a 67/68 9" housing I have and using it in a regular GT mustang.  The question I have is are the 31 spline axles different between 67 and 70 shelbys and mustangs that came with 9' and 31 spline from the factory and if so are the differences visual (marks or tweaks in look? what are they?) or functional (ie these wont fit say in a 67 or 68 Shelby GT500 housing w/3rd member).  I always thought they would work in any 67-70 9" housing with a 31 spline center section but can't remember for sure. Just hoping for a little education before I try to use them in a project or get rid of them.

Thanks for the info. Looking at the sail panels now with your information it makes sense. Of course I installed the rear glass last night- ugh.  I'll have to improvise or just pop the glass back out- went in pretty easy so not the end of the world to redo it. I wished I has asked earlier :-[

I purchased a pair or new repro sail panels as I didn't have the originals and originality isn't a big deal for this car. I am used to working on earlier mustangs and not the 69/70 years and can't seem to envision how they mount. I tried Youtube but didn't see any videos. Basically on the back of them there is a square tab to insert a mounting clip like on door panels. Where else and how does it mount to the car?  I can't image one clip hold the entire sail panel?  If anyone could share some insight or pictures I'd really appreciate it.  Thanks

I've seen it asked about in a number of places over the years to try and prove and or make its case. Its possible it was a Shelby but its just as possible that someone added enough parts to fit a story to convince people a regular mustang was a Shelby.  I never got the vibe in past posts but in this video it just seemed like they were trying to create a narrative around the car but things didn't seem to line up with the timeline presented. Also, when you start to freshen up a car like they have and start replacing parts you lose the story the take-off parts may have told (versus the replacements you added to maybe or maybe not tell a different story).  Who knows, maybe someone will step forward and have original paperwork, tags and pictures and add a fairy tail ending to the story. Regardless of what it is today it does have a Bad-A.. look and the clip on side scoops were cool.

In case you haven't seen it, go out to YouTube and search for "We found the largest ford/Shelby performance car collection".  The Petersen Museum just released it (They have a number of great collection videos).   The collection owner is a Gary Thomas.  As someone who doesn't have a collection like that its amazing to see rows with multiples of the Shelby years and Boss cars.  There are two videos- well worth the watch.

Hey Hoovie- welcome to the world of collector car forums lol.  There is definitely a subset of folks on this forum, the Boss 302 Reg site etc. that like to bash people and their cars for entertainment or self serving purposes. There are others that offer constructive feedback that's invaluable and unfortunately you have to deal with both to get to the nuggets of automotive wisdom.

I've had many of the same brand cars as you and was happy when I saw your Shelby video.  I have a 66 fastback set-up much like yours- same growl and heavy clutch so I enjoyed seeing you stall it since I've done the same.  Make some more video's on it, maybe try an old Camaro next or even a Model A to introduce to your followers the entertainment a vintage car can offer. People would be probably be surprised to find a decently set up 60's mustang handles as good as an 80's Lambo (actually both are bad!). Anyways, nice job on what you have done to get younger people interested in cars and what you have built for yourself.

Not that they cant be changed but the small bracket that's used to attach the pod to the dash metal is stamped/cut different and is pretty clearly different between the repro's versus the originals. Just another reference point when comparing the two.

Yes, I started the thread asking about the 68 bump-out (not on 67's) that's shown with the green arrow and what its used for. Sounds like some of the earlier notes were addressing the upper point with the red arrows.  Do the previous responses still apply and that rear bump indicated by the green arrow was for some sort of should seat belt mount for the back seat passengers?  Thanks for the extra pictures- mine weren't the greatest.

Wow- thanks for the reply. I've never seen a fastback with rear shoulder belts in it- can't even imagine how that would look! I tried finding a picture but couldn't.  I've had a lot of mustangs over the years and never noticed that bump-out, just when I think I know a decent amount these cars surprise me with something different.

I was looking at a 68 fastback project of mine last night and noticed the bump out area in the upper metal structural area below the rear glass which is hidden behind the interior fiberglass vent panels (red primer picture).  I never noticed that before and it looks like an attachment point for something but I have no idea what.  The second rear interior picture is on my 67 fastback (rusty sheet metal) and it doesn't not have that bump-out in the metal. I thought it was odd they would create it as a one year thing.  Have any ideas on why that was added in 1968 and what that was used for?

The correct ribbed panels for the front of the 69/70 cars are available at West Coast Classic Cougar. They are only small sections so you would have to blend them into a full floor.

Thanks for the breakdown- can't beat the pictures you come up with. As shown in my pictures my reproduction pigtails have black and green wires to the sockets but connect to the harness with a black and red wire. In the end it sounds like I need to connect my harness wires (left green and right side redish) to the red wire coming out of my new pigtail wires shown and connect the two black harness wires on each side of the car (the one post and one that looks like a flag at the end) together and then to the black wire coming off the pigtail.  I think that's what I'm hearing, if I'm not understanding that correctly let me know.   Did I mention that I hate wiring?  :(      I honestly think that without this site I would have given up on many of my projects over the years- thanks to all.

I am trying to hook up my new taillight wire assembly and new pigtail kit for the bulbs.  The right and left tail harness have a black post wire, a black flag end wire and the green/red or red/white wires.  Seems like to many wires coming out of the harness for the simple black and red ones available on the pigtail extensions.  Can someone tell me if they are all used and what wires should be connected with what? Thanks.

Here is my mystery for today. I was cleaning up and found 2 large washers in with my 67 Shelby spares. Anyone know what there are used for- odd that they have a part number (ID54-200) on a washer so I figured I'd ask.

I had these saved because I liked the detailing but I'm not an expert and can't say they are 100% for you to model yours after.
