1965 GT350/R-Model / Re: Registering and titling a '65 GT350
« on: March 07, 2024, 07:22:40 PM »
I know this has probably been asked many times, but this is the first '65 GT350 I have ever had so wanted to check. I see on the title of the car I am buying has only the Shelby serial number, no Ford VIN. I am assuming my state, New Mexico, will transfer the title using that number on it and the registration without any problems or questions about a Ford VIN. I am hoping all states recognize the Shelby serial number and not a Ford VIN, correct?
Unfortunately all states are not the same and it is more a bureaucratic issue meaning it depends on the state and also the person in the state. Technically Shelby and the Shelby VIN is the MFG of record and all states should recognize that. Some times you may have to argue the point with supporting documentation to get the correct way. If you are lucky you will not. In the end it really doesn't matter if you can't win the argument because there was only one Ford VIN that went with one specific Shelby VIN and vice versa.  On the tax side a 65 Shelby VIN can be easily flagged in the system for its high 6 figure value in those states that collect personal property tax every year base on the cars value. That is what happens in my home state of MO on a evolving basis for classic cars that are identifiable as high value. A Ford VIN identifies a old Mustang not worth enough to bother.

It is amazing when looking at the title for my 1966 GT350H
Issued in Jan 1972, after purchasing it on Dec 17, 1971
Make and Body Style of Vehicle "Ford 2H" (I guess they couldn't or wouldn't recognize Shelby as a Manufacturer)
Serial Number "GT350SFM6S1431"
Still uses that number on the State Registration
When I owned Hertz car 1855, the title said "Ford 2" and Serial Number "SFM 6S1855"

My 1975 Kawasaki Z1 B,  Purchased April 21, 1975 as the following--- Make and Body Style "Kawa MC"

I guess they just made them up as they went along

My brother in law collected Harley Shirts. Before he passed away from ALS he had his wife and sister make a quilt of shirt for each of his 8 kids
it was a great way to help make sure the shirts were not just tossed away.
Love the quilts you had made
I am at the age where I'm trying to "correct size" rather than acquire stuff

Went there in 1964-65.  My uncle wanted to see the the Formula S Barraccudas run
Don’t remember much except it was hot and noisy

Agree about El Mirage.  You needed to keep your head on a swivel as there was always fast moving stuff out there.  One time saw Brock out there with an Ultra Lite.

Met him at a Hang Glider Meet in Nags Head NC. His company was called Ultralight Products (UP) . His stuff made the rest of our stuff look like junk
Used to transport my hang glider on the top of my 66 GT350

The Cobra should be csx3018 at El Mirage just after it's winter break refresh (body and engine) due to an incident at the 1966 Road America races (not sure if incident happened at the June or September event).  El Mirage as mentioned earlier by another poster due to dust instead of Salt Lake crust.

The mountains look awfully close to be Bonneville, see how far they are away in these pictures from 1972

As far as the Hertz Cars go, I believe there were
59 Green
60 Blue
61 Red 71 White
The rest in Black
I think one was White with Blue Stripes.
I had heard 18 white with Blue Stripe, Randy Gillis owned one of these

Wanted to Buy / Re: Shock bushings

Looking for a source for shock bushings for a 1966 GT350
Rubbers, nuts and washers
Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Steve Mc
It would be important to know which shock one is using. If you car is under approximately 900 it would have Koni's from the factory . If higher then approximately 900 it would come with Ford adjustable shocks from the factory.  The Ford adjustable use a different type of upper bushing compared to a Koni version. Because of availability the majority of 66 owners choose to run a Koni shock vintage or later versions. If using Koni's the as mentioned Cobra Automotive alternative parts will work but they are a different material and especially the upper bushings will look different in shape compared to vintage original. Just in case that matters I wanted to bring that attention for those reading . If that is a secondary consideration then the Cobra Automotive Parts will work fine for the Koni's.

Changing from Koni's to the Ford adjustable, shape and material not a problem, just want them to fit. May not like them and change back to the Koni's which I've had on the car since 72

Cruise night, I can almost see it from my house

The first rule of the Southern Maryland SAAC chapter is, there are no scheduled meetings, no dues, and no officers
I see that the Rod and Reel just announced the parking garage roof top cars and coffee , 2nd Friday of each month, April through October
Maybe another “meeting” should take place
The restaurant 1936 serves great burgers and is located attached to the parking garage
Your thoughts?
