In the world of muscle cars the MCACN show is the pinnacle of shows. I have been in contact with Bob Ashton about a display of Hertz cars for 2021.
First do you think there is enough interest ?
Second can we can enough cars to fill the display area
I would like to get one of each of the 66 colors, (black, white, green, red, and blue) plus at least one each of the 68-69 cars.
I have already gotten a few volunteers, a rare white and blue 66Hertz and a MCA and SAAC gold winning 1969 GT350
If you ever wanted to display your car at a show, this is the one !
If you have been to the MCACN show. You've probably seen the Studebaker and Nash Nutz displays, really cool cars but the Hertz Shelby's are truly unique
So do you want to be a part of history ?
Send me your information and I'll put it together and send to Bob Aston to see if we can make it work
Also looking for Hertz memorabilia (suit bag, drink glasses, signs, tote bags, etc) to display in a locked display case.

During all this Social Distancing", restricted travel, etc. I am taking the time to reread some of my Shelby/Car books The two I reading now are "Shelby Mustang GT350, My years designing, testing and racing Carroll's legendary Mustangs" by Chuck Cantwell with Greg Koloasa and "The First Three Shelby Cobras, The sports cars that changed the game", by Gordon Bruce

Both are good reads and really give you an insight into what would have been a magical time in auto history, surely never to be repeated. I was just born about 5 to 10 years too late to have been a part of it, but was lucky enough to get a GT350 back when they were cheap ($1,000 in 1971). I also remember Ford's "great garage sale in the early 70's where my buddy as able to get a 427 SOHC and bunch of spare parts  including two cylinder heads, gasket sets, for $1300 at Holman and Moody. They had a bunch of high Nickel content machined Boss 301 blocks for $50, Sodium filled 427 exhaust valves a $0.05 apiece, 427 NASCAR engines complete for $500 and a bunch of GT40 parts and stuff. On the way out they offered us an aluminum 494 Boss 429 style Can-Am block for $25 and they would have tossed it in the truck.
Does anybody know of any books about this sale? Or perhaps something about a Shelby sell off when they moved from Calf to Michigan? Or a sell off when Shelby production shut down in 1970?
Any other recommendations of books would be nice to hear about

The Lounge / What one would you choose?
March 31, 2020, 01:24:26 PM
If you had a choice between, Little Red, The Green Hornet or the Bullitt, which one would you take and why?
Myself, I would take Little Red, just because I think it the one that really had "the right stuff"
What's your choice?

CSX 2000 Series / Original Coupes
January 02, 2020, 04:09:21 PM
I've pictures of the bold on the original Coupe (CSX2287) it looks like they had big rollers to form the panels to fit the body buck. Questions are. Was the same body buck sent to Italy? Were the panels rolled or panel beaten in Italy. I know that all were different but was just wondering about the differences between the car. Any book that really covers the cars

The Lounge / Last drive of the year
December 27, 2019, 09:08:14 AM
As the New Year approaches it's time for the last drive of the year/lunch
This year it will be on Dec 31st inHerrington Harbor at the

CHESAPEAKE MARKET & DELI - NORTH BEACH
7150 Lake Shore Dr
North Beach, MD 20714

Plan on meeting at about 12:30 pm and we can just B/S and see how the year went for everyone and what's everyone's plans for 2020. Bring that Shelby out for one last run of the year.
It's a BYOL (Buy Your Own Lunch) but they have a great selection
Great spot at the hotel across the street for a picture (sand, water, open expanse)
You can eat healthy or carb up, your choice
If you don't have a Shelby, bring a Mustang, or even a Ford truck. We can make corvettes and the other truck like products park around back
Bonus. We will have some photos from the recent GT350 Tour in the Ozark's to share
Hope to some folks there (Cory, Phil, that means you guys)

6S1431 will driving rain or shine

The Lounge / Last drive of the year
November 04, 2019, 03:27:54 PM
As usual I'm going out  for the "Last Drive of Year"   It's usually a short one just about 10 or 20 miles, it's to celebrate another year of Shelby ownership, another year of health and just being able to celebrate both. I will try and see how many folks are interested and the location is to be determined, but will probably be in Southern maryland near Calvert County or perhaps the Edgewater/Deale area.
Anyone interested ? I'm planning on the afternoon of Dec 31st (it's a Monday) around 1:00pm. All are welcome buy it's a BYOL (Buy Your Own Lunch), if you have Shelby drive it, it won't melt.

The Lounge / Shelnby American Museum/Shop in Las Vegas
October 13, 2019, 02:49:29 PM
I had a few hours to kill in Las Vegas last week and went to the Shelby Museum/Shop near the airport. It was a little underwhelming in the number of cars ( the main exception was the 1967 Super Snake) but it was neat seeing all the continuation cars and I was amazed at the number of trucks they are modifying. The Cobra's appear to be built on the far side of the shop out of the sight of the public and one of the workers told me that only 2 or 3 people work on them. I took the tour and the guide was enthusiastic and told some stores, mostly some extension of what we've all heard before, but with different facts, it was entertaining to say the least, but not some much factual, more like "never let the facts get I the way of a good story" type of presentation.
Now I will say the gift shop, which makes up the biggest part of the museum/factory was a big draw. It had a lot of really neat stuff, more then any of us really need and I would have bought more expect my wife has threatened to kill me if I bring anything else home
Just wondering if anyone else had thoughts about this place, I was expecting a lot of the Shelby History cars, a bunch of videos, trophies, posters, race programs etc. but while they had some stuff it was a lot less than I expected
All in all it was good for the price ( free) and I'd do it again if I'm stuck in Vegas again. Wish they would have had a couple of Hertz cars for rent  8), now that would have really made it worth it

The Lounge / A Bob Gaines sighting
September 09, 2019, 06:17:31 PM
Saw the man with a wealth of knowledge inspecting and judging a 1967 GT500
Just listening to him I feel smarter.
He is a wealth of knowledge who shares it openly.
A great ambassador to all things Shelby

The Lounge / A great group of folks
August 13, 2019, 03:45:08 PM
I go to a lot of cruises, car shows, etc. and I have to say that Shelby contingent is the best. They are always willing to help, they offer suggestions, they do not criticize. If you break down or have an issue with your car, they open their trunks, trucks, tool boxes, whatever and all jump in to help. When you are looking for some odd ball part or some OEM piece that will help you make your car "better than perfect" you always have more than a few chime in with, " i think i got one" or "I know someone that does". I know some other groups and to say they look down their noses at cars that don't meet their perception of "the standard", they turn and walk away muttering that the owner "does not get it"
All of them are cars, they were built and designed to be driven, some people like originals and won't change a thing, some are on that quest for concurs and without them we would be able to compare cars, some just enjoy owning and driving a half century old classic. Yeah they don't ride or drive like the new ones, but without the "old ones" we wouldn't be talking about the "new ones".
The recent SAAC 44 with both SAAC and Team Shelby to me was refreshing, new blood, old knowledge, classics and newer models, all came together to showcase the cars. The knowledge base of our members is beyond belief, with the older cars the amount of records that have appeared is amazing and the later models all have documentation out the wazoo. I hear some grumbling about the membership cost, but not too much about the membership value, and that is the point, anyone can get together and showcase the cars, but go to a SAAC meet, either regional or national and someone is there to help you in what ever question you have and congratulating you for the stewardship of the car and admiring  your ride
and isn't that what's it all about
Thanks to all of the members who make this happen

The Lounge / 289 HiPo- How many were made?
July 30, 2019, 09:12:51 AM
I know the 289 HiPo came out in 1963 in the Fairlane and ran through the 1967 Model year
Do we know how many were made? Do we know the break down of how many were in Mustangs ( non Shelby) and the break down if coupes, Convertible and fastback?  how many were made with automatics? And how many were in Fairlane, those couple of Falcons in Canada and if it was ever in any other body or car line?
I once heard that 17,500 were made total and just trying get the facts

Replicas and Tribute / Identifying an engine
July 27, 2019, 09:02:35 PM
at a local car show last week a young man with a 1965 Fastback came and he says his car has the 289 HiPo. He went on to explain his great grandfather built the car in the 80's and is was originally a 289 2V ( Vin supports that) A look at the engine show it to have the correct looking Alternator, fuel pump ( 65 style) and harmonic balancer. The intake and distributor were aftermarket. Looking further the car had an aluminum water pump and what appears to be an early front cover with the oil fill opening plugged with a large freeze plug. The exhaust manifolds appear to be Hipo style
The question is did any Mustang have the oil fill tube on the front cover, I know the Fairlanes did but have never seen one on a Mustang. I know also the Cobra's did use this style and my questions is, what if any VIN was stamped on engines designated for a Cobra.
I told where to look for casting dates and the VIN stamp  and to pull the valve covers and take pictures
I found out his grandfather is the original owner of my GT350 and his great grandfather I also knew.
Anything else he should search for as we try and determine where the engine came form
PS
I'm still searching for my original block for 6S1431, I believe it is in Solana Beach Calf. and was removed by a Scott Martin in 2000 from car 6S1855
