1967 Shelby GT350/500 / Re: 67 Steering Wheel Restoration
November 21, 2022, 09:52:41 AM
Hi Bill,
In the past, Jeff Stephens has told me he does not do anything to the metal spokes or center hub part of the steering wheel. He will do some simple polishing on the spokes where they meet the wood (where the phenolic material joints the metal and wood) to improve appearance but nothing "metal working" like you describe.

A question I have is "why" do you want to do anything to that spring under the dash? What ever problem you are trying to address - there is a 90% chance that the spring IS NOT the problem. From past experience I would suggest doing some really good investigation before attacking the spring.
Most of the possible problems will require dealing with the spring but the spring is probably not the problem.

1967 Shelby GT350/500 / Re: Fuel log and fittings
September 05, 2022, 04:20:11 PM
The pictures Dominic posted are very helpful. Some of my observations have been that some original 63/64 fuel logs have the attaching straps welded on (like the repo's that are available). I have not seen any fuel logs that were reported as original 67 Shelby that did not have spot welded straps.
The color of the plating is also important to notice. The original 67 fuel logs have the dichromate that seems to have more green tint. All the repo's seem to have the heavy gold tint look.

Concours Talk / Re: '65 Export brace

Were the original 1965 and 1966 Shelby braces the same or was there a difference between to two years?

This morning #1154 got out of the garage and went for a front end alignment; Been trying to find time & opportunity to do this for quite a while; All was good - had a great professional to do the work; Had a lot of "lookie lous" stop in to check out the car while it was in public; Home safe & sound now ..... But covered with pollen..... "Yikes"

Currently working on body work and prep for a 1969 Shelby GT 350 Convertible, Dearborn built, 01/13/1969 build date, #480202; Car was stripped and dipped back in the 80's so I do not have a clue as to what was original; I have looked for information here and on CM Forum but have not found a clear answer;
What I have seen is the possibility it could be red oxide or dark slop primer; I found one reference that there was a change by Ford in the February 69 time frame; Not sure if that was to start using the slop primer or go back to red oxide primer; I also saw a note that the engine compartment up to the fire wall would have red oxide under the black but from fire wall back would be slop primer. Any help or further information would be appreciated. Currently at the point to actually do the undercarriage painting. Thanks for your help.

1967 Shelby GT350/500 / Re: 67 photos from the web

The car in Reply #300 above belonged to my Father from 1974 to 2011/2012 time frame. The car was wrecked/totaled in the 70/71 time frame (ended up belonging to an Insurance Company). It set in a Junkyard until 1974 when the guy that originally wrecked it went and got it out of the Junkyard and brought it to my Father - we were looking for parts I needed for my car. It had already been stripped of any "good" before it got to us but we got four or five items off it. My brother used the third member in a 70 Bronco way back in the day. I still have the original bent-up grille.
A guy bought this "hull" from my Father around 2011/2012 with a goal to "return it to it's original beauty". I have lost track of what happened to it after that but it hasn't turned up to my knowledge.
Just a few details to go with the pictures. You would not believe how many people hunted down my Father to ask about the car over the years. He got to where he would create "unusual stories" to tell about it's history for his own entertainment.
By the way, I have provided a full and complete story about this car to Dave Mathews.

1968 Shelby GT350/500/500KR / Re: SHOCK TOWER CAPS
December 14, 2021, 02:14:21 PM
Having a bit of experience in manufacturing and fabrication I believe it is possible the "copper colored" spots on the OP's caps may be due to a fixture to hold the caps and washers for welding. The contact points for the fixture may have been copper in order to ground the part. The appearance could be influenced (more or less noticeable) due to too high a temperature setting on the welder. Basically, during the welding some of the copper was transferred to the part due to current flow. I have seen similar type results on other parts (not automotive) that were machine welded.
Just my two cents.

Gary,
That photo is exactly what I need - any chance you have another close-up of the area?
I think there is a good chance Bob G. is right - there has been a trailer hitch on car. I will try to get a picture posted soon.
Right in the middle, in front of the gas tank opening there appears to be a stamping detail (in the original metal). The picture Gary B. provided shows what looks like two ridges right in the center area. My car has a sizable hole right in between the ridges.
Thanks very much for your comments and picture. I would like to see additional pictures if anyone has some more.
Thank You.
