Years ago, I did this on my 66 GT fastback (drums/shoes & Fairlane wagon backing plates) & it worked out well. I did nothing with rear wheel cylinders, master cyl or K-H disc prop valve and track time at Hallett seemed AOK. Is the OEM 65/66 K-H prop valve adjustable?

Now, 20 yrs later, I want to do it on my 70 Boss but am I leaving anything out?
In '65, did Mr Shelby do anything other than what I did 1st time around?
Was the R-model solution any different than the street cars?

I'm about to spring for a set of 2 1/2" backing plates and need to know what else is needed to be accurate or what's recommended as an improvement. (Already have 2.5" drums/shoes)
I.e. Cobra Automotive puts bigger wheel cylinders in their kits...seems like that would change the bias rearward a bit. Maybe THAT is a good thing.

Thanks guys...!

You guys probably already know this, but here's what the originals looked like.
Jamesfee,. looks like you were correct...

Not sure what year these were made or if these are Shelby correct but I got them with an SN-60 Paxton setup about 20 years ago in Houston.
I swapped a 66 LeMans Holley and cash for it.

Oh BTW Crxnug, that is a beautiful set of gauges... Great job having them reproduced.
(FYI: a sticker on the back says Marsh Instruments Skokie, IL)

I know it's a bit off topic, but:
Can 10 psi be squeezed out of these old units with an improved impeller?
Anyone running the 4100? I've got a 600 and a 670 (1.19) I'm considering...

Randy,

Thanks for the good info. No pop rivets here, though.

Tesgt,
I'll use what he recommends but was hoping for some guidance at least in terms of style, appearance, etc so it'd at least appear to be period correct.

I understand this is not correct.
I just want it to be functional & hint at its understated performance.

Thx for the info Bob.

It's a 66 GT fastback I've owned for 30+ yrs with an OEM steel hood & a new steel GT350 style scoop.

I'm refreshing it by putting in a fresh HiPo 289 (OK, a Mexican block w/Boss internals) & hybrid GT(trumpets)/R-model (side exit) exhaust system.

It will have a port-hole opening below a functional hood scoop riveted on by an aircraft mechanic....

I want it to have an old-school look that is all business... So, flat or round rivets? Alum or Monel, every 1.5" (aircraft standard) or just every 2" (or so ?) since I won't likely be flying it...

Hopefully, Mr Shelby will be smiling on my endeavor.

Need your help to have the proper effect.

Thank you for engaging, Bob.

Thanks Bob,

So I guess I'll try to replicate the rivets on the Cobra hood scoops.
I only found 427s with riveted the scoop. Is that true or is it just more common on the 3000s?

The gallery pics I saw indicate the # of rivets vary anywhere from 31-35 and are round top.

Is there anything that documents the #, size and type of rivets?

So I'll have a 65-68 BOSSxyz or a MACH1?  And it's 'official' since Ford sold them the rights to use its name and a company that used to make continuation Cobras is gonna make it authentic by registering an old VIN has now been refreshed with badass new technology.  That's ALMOST seems reasonable.

But to put on old VIN on a new (or old) body shell I thought was a crime.
Is if not?

Or is it merely pulling the wool over a buyers eyes if you can make him think that a Dynacorn body with a 'T' code VIN & a 'G' code engine makes its a BOSS 302?

What's next, cloning humans?

1965 GT350/R-Model / Hood scoop rivets?
April 20, 2018, 03:04:50 PM
Were the hood scoops for the 65 R models riveted to the hood?

If so, what size/type of rivets & how many were used?

If not, maybe it's the Cobra hood scoops I was thinking of.
Can someone please confirm?

Thx,

Phil
