1966 Idler arm needed, Which supplier?
« on: March 18, 2020, 01:06:41 PM »
Hello Folks,

Need to replace my idler arm on 2170. Very small amount of play but like to keep things fresh

Can you suggest a supplier? Don't need NOS, nor show car correct. Just correct fitting. Branda? Virginia Mustang?

Cheers. Peter

The bushing can be replaced, would be a better option if you have the OEM idler.

I would replace the bushing as both the idler arm and the pitman arm are unique Shelby parts.  Theyr are different in length from the standard Mustang parts.  DO NOT mix the two together.  I think the bushings are the same however.  Some forty years ago when I replaced the one in 817, Moog had a roller bearing replacement which I used.  It's been fine ever since as there was no rubber to rot away.  I'm sure that part has long since been discontinued...

Virginia Mustang does have the complete 65-66 GT350 quick steering kit.

If you just need an idler bushing, for a driver the roller bearing kit as mentioned is the way to go IMO. The old Moog kits can still be found, part# K451. Cobra Automotive also carries a kit.

If I remember in addition to the longer arms Shelby used a different ratio in the steering box - same ratio as PS box but manual.

The steering box was part of the special handling package and ordered with that option by SA.

It's the same ratio as P/S, just a different pre-load and a different tag #.

I think I'd still put the Moog roller bearing bushing (P/N K451) in if you can find one, even with a new idler arm.
