In honor of Veteran’s Day and our WW2 Veteran’s:

“What did you do during the War?” Carroll Shelby


My dear old Dad (now 96 years old) has never been a car person; however, Dad has joined me at Barrett Jackson – Scottsdale each time I have sold a Shelby there.

Dear old Dad would not recognize Carroll Shelby ….. which is what happened before the 2010 Scottsdale Barrett Jackson Opening Gala.
Dad saw an elderly peer (Carroll Shelby) standing near the BJ Scottsdale auction stage. Dad walked up to Carroll and said “We must be the oldest guys here …. ”

Shelby sized up my Dad and asked “What did you do during the War?” (Meaning WW2.) Dad shared “Army Air Corps”. Shelby brightened right up and responded “What were you trained on?”. Dear old Dad: “B29”. Shelby openly smiled ….. unfortunately, before the conversation could continue, Shelby’s handlers came and got him.

I came around the corner to see Mr. Shelby with my Dad. I rushed up to Dad and asked what he was talking about with Carroll Shelby? Dear old Dad response ….. “That was Carroll Shelby?”

Mr. Shelby was obviously proud of his service during WW2; in the Army Air Corp.

At the Texas Nationals in Dallas 1994, Shelby was sitting in the passenger seat of my 65 GT350 and asked if he should sign the clove compartment door for me. I answered NO and he looked at me and said, why not and I answered, it's not original.
He started laughing and said, you are crazy. He was correct as I regret it now.
