Does anyone know the status of this GT 350 H? It was supposedly one of two never rented. I owned it in the mid 1970s. Thank you.

I have heard that 2 never rented number before, but think those two were cars that Hertz didn't accept at the end of the year, or some such.  My 6s598 was kept around as a demonstrator and never sent to Hertz, either.  There may be more out there than we think.

Possibly. I purchased 1882 from a dealer in Clarendon, VA......close to DC in the early 70's. It was represented as a non-rented car, but honestly, at that time it did not mean much to me, young and stupid. I think the car came out of Larsen Ford. Anyway, I enjoyed it greatly for several years prior to selling it to a gentleman from the Roanoke, VA area. I was able to acquire anothe Hertz car in 2001, 1947, and have grown a little wiser with age as I still have it and enjoy it.

Back in the day when the stigma of a "lesser rental car " was the norm (then not now),I heard countless stories of non rented rental cars. I believe the motivation was to mitigate the rental car perception. I would venture a guess of 99% BS on the stories I heard .

I would venture to say the majority of rentals are treated responsibly.

Occasionally, beaten or the rear seats pulled out, but thats not the norm.

A stigma mostly undeserved

It might only be part of the urban legend from the rental days, but I have heard the GT350H back in the day was called "Rent-A-Wreck" because of the rental car stigma.  I can't remember where I read or heard this.  I would guess in a Shelby Owners Associations (SOA) newsletter or the early small format Shelby Americans newsletter.  Am I mistaken?

I don't think that term was specific to the GT350 H . I think it was more a generic derogatory term. I think it was more commonly associated back in the day with lesser rental car companies that kept older rentals and had a lessor reputation for maintenance compared to Hertz. Hertz was pretty much the gold standard back in the day. Just my perception.

rent a wreck was a real rental car company, might still be around. i remember  when they used to rent used clunkers for way less money than anyone else. we used to sell rental cars as "one owner, 7000 drivers!!" and yes, we used to beat the crud out of them. ever wonder what the fastest speed tou can go, ans still throw it in park? it hurtz. phred

Original owner of 6S550. Owned since 1967. 64,000 Miles, all body original except hood and front valance. All glass original except windshield. Still has aluminum 4 speed. Has replacement Mico.  Also own 1966 Mustang convertible. They are drivers, not trailer queens.

Hood pins were a commonly stolen back in the day. Many replaced them with the small master locks because they got tired of replacing and for extra security.

That is a good guess  ;) given all 66 GT350's typically came with studs,click pins from SA. If it didn't logically then it was more likely replaced by someone else not familiar with Shelby's. Howards info would typically relate to warranty work etc. A collision repair (one reason for hood replacement ) or the like would not be part of that information associated with what SA/Ford had to pay for.
