I took some time off as a magazine writer when CS asked me to come work for him in the Shelby Dakota production and early Viper development era.

Several of those cars in the photos I have driven.  The white Dakota with the unique stripes had a hot rodded 360 V8 that we built for development of a 360 (versus the 318 that made it to production.) It was later beefed some more as a magazine test car.  Fun machine. I remember a Car Craft drag test/shootout of factory "toy box" vehicles in 1989.

In that era, Shelby Automobiles also was working on a twin-turbo 318 Dakota that was painted red.  Wonder what happened to it.

A Pantera that CS drove had a Lotus-head Chrysler 2.2 turbo in it, when I was there. Not sure if this is the same car in the photo.

The Series 1 performance numbers referred to in the Yahoo article are for a one-off supercharged version that Shelby built for a Motor Trend shootout, when I was at that magazine. (I don't know if that was S/N 001 or not, although I also drove the very early Series 1 engineering cars.)  The supercharged car was one of Gary Patterson's early "get 'er done" projects for the guys in the Shelby shop.  Gary was the only one crazy enough to drive it in the top speed tests.  That car could be a bit...er...treacherous.  No way that a stock naturally-aspirated Series 1 could do 0-60 in 3.2 sec, or 175 mph top speed. The little Aurora engine needed to be breathed on.

Fun times.   Will be interesting to see what the auction pulls.

Looks like the collection of personal vehicles held in trust at the Gardena shop that were to be on exhibit at the proposed CS Museum.  I remember seeing many of them back in the previous Goodyear warehouse on site back in the late 1980s.  I am guessing that the museum is now no longer in the future plans. 8)

Pix from the aforementioned Motor Trend top speed shootout, circa 2000.

Venue is Ford's Kingman AZ Proving Grounds banked oval. (4.5 miles IIRC.)

Gary Patterson in red helmet.

The one-off supercharged Series 1 had red stripes. The one in the auction has blue.  So I'm assuming it is not the same car. But, yes, it could've later been painted.

Kiwi broiling in the hot Arizona sun, during the MT top speed test.

105 degrees in the shade.  Crazy hot in the sun.

Thus Kiwi's nifty aluminum foil hat liner.

There are only 20 cars in the photograph. Is there a list of the vehicles posted somewhere? I'd like to know what the other 4 cars are.

Auction details and list of vehicles not yet posted at: https://www.bonhams.com/auctions/24810/#

Wonder if it includes any of his Dodge Jeeps, especially the one that was modified by Dodge SRT with a Viper engine.

"In that era, Shelby Automobiles also was working on a twin-turbo 318 Dakota that was painted red.  Wonder what happened to it." *

*After he died the talk was that it went to a shop in LA to get it running and I am to understand that the shop wither lost or stole the twin chargers off the truck and then the truck got lost! I drove with CS in that truck back in 1992 or so in LA and that was the fastest truck I have ever been in - WOW!

Just for shits-n-giggles I ran the VIN number of the truck thru a buddys dodge dealership OASIS system back in the late 1990's and the system showed the truck had been built as a Shelby and ordered without a drive-train! It showed open recalls but no record of ever being titled or owned or nothing - CS said they gave it to him and it was to be scrapped after the Dodge-Shelby programs ended - I wonder if Dodge took it back from CS Trust? Last time I saw it it was in old Vegas facility.

The two Pantera's are from the early 1980's and were given to him as part of deal for his assistance in trying to get ford to begin selling them in USA (GTS)? The deal fell out and he kept the two cars - The red one had less then 3000 miles on it when I saw it in LA when he and i were filming the 3D movie back in 2010 or so

The maroon 1969 GT 500 FB in one that he bought off of me in early 2000's - It is a 4 speed car - I bought it from a Ford dealer if I recall correctly near pittsburgh - Really nice car - One re-paint - SGB
