Shelby Automotive was the division of FoMoCo that was responsible for producing 619 Cougar XR7-Gs from 1968-'70. Hertz received 200 of the total amount. The XR7-G was based on the XR-7-optioned Cougar, the G designation being a play on Gurney--Dan Gurney

The first batch of Hertz show car XR7-G's were equipped with the 390-2V X code engine. There was also a 1967 S code 390-GT XR7-G prototype that was used for design approval.

The production version of the Hertz XR7-G was equipped with the 390-4V "S" code engine, C6 transmission, 2.75 to 1 open rear end, AC, PS, power disc / drum brakes, AM radio and tilt - away. Tinted glass was a mandatory option with AC equipped cars. All of the Hertz XR7-G's were in non - metallic colors and identically equipped other than colors. 188 identical examples were built.

The 390 was not the only engine.   A good buddy of mine has one of the originals with a 302 in it.   It is black on black.

He's owned it since new...and owns the company that made the nameplates for it, and for many Shelbys, back in the day.

The 390 engine was the only engine used by Hertz. First an S code, then a group of X codes, then all of the next 188 were S code 1968's.

Any of the engine options used in a 1968 Cougar XR-7 could have been had in the XR7-G and production records show XR7-G's were produced and sold with engine codes of F, J, S, X , R and 6.

Thanks, Royce, for the info.  I was reading quickly, on my phone, and replying to what I thought was referencing all XR7-Gs.
