Rear Valance ?
« on: February 15, 2021, 08:17:20 AM »
Over the years I see '67s with and without chrome trim rings around the tailpipe cutouts on the rear valence. I was under the impression that this was a 1968 thing...... of course I have been wrong before.

Correct, not correct, only correct after a particular serial number or range ?

Thank you in advance........

'67's started out with a bright trim ring (there were two early versions)  that were added to the modified stock Ford rear valance that didn't have any exhaust cut-outs the cut-out were hand cut by Shelby workers' and then the trim added to dress the rough cut-out.  Later the cars got the Ford GT rear valance - cheaper easier and no trim.  I think the change-over was early in the '67 calendar.  (I have been e-mailed that it is thought the change occurred at the very end of January)

The early cars that got the added bright trim got either a '66 GT trim that was modified by Shelby workers by cutting off a portion of the bottom (top image) or a flat piece that was also used in '68 on some special Cougars (bottom image).

I've seen Shelby numbers from 7-something to 8-something with the chrome trim.  It's another one of those "it depends" things.  Certainly anything under car 600 (or so).

Always some thing to learn from the members here ! I file all this info for future reference.

A bit off topic, in post #2, the first image, from the Shelby American,  with the flared trumpets, are those original ? They look

similar to the factory ones I had on my '70 442 Oldsmobile.

The single exhaust tips in the replies above are all '67 Shelby, there were two versions, one-piece and the two-piece,,,

Thanks JD for the extra information, the exhaust tip in post #2 looks more flared than the last images you posted, or is it just the

 angle and lighting ?

It's just the angle of the camera to the tip.

It was a change done by date, not by serial number. Ford Production date the end of the first week in February which conforms to a late January directive. We began to see the the GT Mustang rear exhaust panels on cars completed at Shelby the beginning of March. With 67's however, there are always exceptions to the rule. It makes them even more interesting.

My old car, #910, had the chrome around the cutouts.

I am aware of another low 900 number Shelby with a very late January SJ build and a SA April completion with the hand-trimmed valance with clipped '66 Trim rings as well.

As Dave states, the SJ build and the SA completion dates are key to follow on these cars - a times more so than the VIN numbers on these '67's.

JD,
I'm not convinced the that the early flat pieces used on the October '66 builds were the same as the '68 Cougar trim used.
Those Cougar drawings (Philip/propayne provided a few years back) don't look identical to what has been found on the Shelby's.

When?
As JD and Dave M. noted, the rear valance was a Ford SJ supplied part and thus the Shelby VIN number is not really relevant.
(There were SAI completed cars with four digit VINs that have them.)
The SJ build date is the important detail to follow. The change notice Shelby issued to Ford was dated in late January...1/25/67.
I also believe the change over to the stamped GT rear valance was implemented sometime in the first week of February at Ford SJ.

There some interesting conversation on this topic in the attached thread;
