Removing yellow cad off of bolts?
« on: February 25, 2021, 09:36:24 AM »
Since the yellow cad eventually washes off of it's silver zinc cad plating, is there a way of expediting that on new yellow cad bolts? Simply. This isn't NASA.

I'm guessing you're referring to gold dichromate on zinc plated parts?  If so, I've found that evaporust will remove it safely.  I've done this on several parts that I had re-plated and the gold didn't turn out good.  I have the yellow gold solution to dunk them in.

There are other quicker methods, like vinegar (if I remember right).  Or, quick acid dunks.

Yep. "Evaporust"? What is that? A rust remover solvent?

Just did this on some bolts. Was too cheap to buy anything new (didn't have any evaporust handy) so raided the household cleaning shelf, found some toilet bowl cleaner called "Kaboom" used to remove scale & rust stains. It contains hydrochloric acid, made quick and easy work of the yellow zinc.

I just tried it. It washes the yellow off like it is watercolor paints! It doesn't even seem to leave a residue.

Now I know what I'll be doing all day. Thanks. Very helpful suggestions.  ;D

Find it in many places. I bought mine off of Amazon a few years ago. A bucket with a inner screen bucket. I just put rusty parts in it and let them sit.  BY no means am I supporting the seller in the link-just the first link that came up. I like the bucket method. I have also used the Jell on my 428CJ engine and headers.

Can you elaborate your process and the solution you are using? Thanks. Gary

Tried what, Doug? "Kaboom"?

I had a little "jelly", grape I think, laying around. Tried it on one bolt. Worked great.

Went to Lowe's and bought some Rustoleum Rust remover Jelly in the squirt bottle. Works the same way. Tastes great, less filling.

The re-dipping?  I have the gold dichromate stuff, I think Caswell sells it.  Mix it with water per spec ratio and just dunk the parts for 30-60s.  Use a heat gun to dry as they come out.

This won't work very well on bare metal parts.  A shiny silver zinc base is required to get the best results.

I do same as Charles.  The thing about Evaporust on these parts is it will actually brighten the zinc as a side benefit of removing the dichromate.

I didn't use Evaporust but they did come out pretty shiny.

Some where some one is driving their collector car for the last time but they don't know it . Drive your car every time like it could be the last memory of it .

Have used vinegar to remove the dichromate in the past. If full strength have to watch it as it can go too far and start removing the base zinc coat if you leave to too long
