I have personally seen a DST factory brochure that showed a early small block Cobra that they had attached a LeMans style hardtop to.

The other Ford Custom Car Caravan Cobra:
Barris/Fetherston explain in their book that they got a brand new 427 Cobra and customised it with the headrest, rear fender shape and sidepipes plus painted it a organic blue/silver pearl called shade for the Custom Car Caravan.

this looks to me like a 289 Cobra, not a 427

Definitely a 289. And I never really cared for the work of George Barris, even prior to seeing how badly he rendered a Cobra.

DST is a great mystery, there should be a lot more

DST - Dearborn Steel Tubing @MI
Carron & Co.  @MI
Livernois Engineering @MI
Bill Stroppe  @ CA
Watson Engineering  @MI
Roush Inc.  @MI

These were all used as outside engineering/fabrication/prototype contractors over the years, for performance, and regular production development programs, much like Kar Kraft, SAI & H&M were used for racing.

Something about that photo looks off to me.  I think it's been airbrushed.  Did that hardtop even exist?

Looks like it did in some form. Interesting that the Cobra they are working on has no suspension or taillights.
