This is current map of cargo containers at sea waiting to port around the U.S. There are now 200,000 just at the Long Beach, CA port waiting to dock. There is also a shortage of 80,000 truckers and other transport workers in the industry. I don't know what else is going on and I don't want to scare anyone but I think not just consumer items but food, gas and other goods are going to be in short supply soon and prices are going to skyrocket!!!

In the diamond 💎 industry pricing is at an all time high because of supply and demand....😳

^^^ Agreed on all.

That map looks like a graphic of sharks attacking dead whales.   Or cancer cells attacking organs.

All pretty much the same as far as America is concerned vis-a-vis China.

One report is that due to the governor's past regulations, there is no space or empty containers due to limiting stacking from four down to two.  That regulation was rescinded (temporarily) as one o the ways to open dock space to unload arriving cargo and transfer the empties back on to outgoing ships.  The other was the federal order to open to 24/7 operations.  I never knew docks were on shorter days and hours, other than federal holidays.  I guess it depends on the state and union dock worker rules. 8)

not every dot is a container ship    there are private vessels required to have  The AIS is a shipboard broadcast system that acts like a transponder, operating in the VHF maritime band.  baltimore harbor only has about 10 ships waiting to dock ( i can see them from here )  not  some huge log jam here   pretty normal  conditions .
Some where some one is driving their collector car for the last time but they don't know it . Drive your car every time like it could be the last memory of it .

I read in the local paper (I'm in Canada, near Toronto) that some companies have taken to flying goods to get around this mess.

As a professional Mariner, I can assure you AIS always looks like that.

And yeah, any boat with Ais has a dot.
Also of note, it looks super heavy on the coast because of two reasons:
1. Most traffic is coastwise
2. Boat like mine only ping the system when in vhf range. So the dot is still coastwise when we are 1,000 miles away.

Please understand a system before commenting on it.

For instance, my boat is still showing it is off the Canary Islands (it is not, we haven’t been there in three months).

200,000 containers seems really high right?
I assume they mean TEU and not actual containers.
I mean, realistically for Los Angeles, that is probably 14-21 days behind.

This year has been a record for shipping. A port can only handle what it can handle. Might take awhile to get caught up.
Our supply chain is fragile in so much as it is designed for a specific load, not a ton of excess is factored in.
This is why I’ve worked so often at ports, every few years there are expansions, etc.  It isn’t like there are gantry cranes and 10,000 extra trucks just sitting around.
It’ll get back to “usa normal” before too long, just be patient.
Might be hard for some of you….  If you’ve never lived outside the USA it might be easy to have gotten spoiled by the supply chain.
I dunno 🤷‍♂️ I’m kinda used to living in places where you can only buy one bag of lettuce, or are only allowed 4 eggs a day. Of course in most of these places, the liquor stores are fully stocked 😂😂😂
Might be why.

Drew: Thanks for your insight on the maritime info.

No problem, It’s often hard when dealing with maritime stuff to understand scale.
You can envision a TEU, 20x8x8….  But no normal person can visualize 9,000,000 of them. That is what LA does in just one port.

I was in NYC Dec 2019 before the pandemic. I remember wondering where all the ships were. It was a ghost town. That is when I realized Covid was a big deal in China….  I mean these dudes don’t fret 100k deaths. So it must have been really bad, way worse than claimed. I told my wife to stock up on stuff due to this.
The ripple will be felt for years really.  Anyone who says it’ll be back 100% within a year is a serious optimist.
This is all physical stuff.  When a product is made in China, there are easily 80 hands on it before it hits your local store. We should be thrilled the bottleneck is just some trucks on our end.

Back to my last post…. Crack open a beer. Buy local, enjoy the sunset.

It is an interesting topic and admittedly something that I have rarely or ever considered the consequences of?
