Shelby's Sky Terrace Motel Ads
« on: November 30, 2021, 02:53:22 PM »
More MCACN scores!

These newspaper ads for Carroll Shelby's motel in Lake Tahoe show a later version of himself on the left and a vintage version of him on the right. The combo ad on the left also has a nice shot of CSX2345 in a cool ad for Autosport Products, Inc. It mentions a "revised 1971 Cobra Parts Book" and the ad on the right had race results on the back that I was able to Google date as April 24, 1970 - so it's nice to be able to have a date for these two ads.

Speaking of Shelby in Tahoe...here's a Tahoe Quarterly article written in 2015.

Not a bad piece. But they missed the part about his replacement heart & kidney.

It was right down the street from his Ford dealership.

https://www.tahoedailytribune.com/news/south-shore-motors-has-muscular-history/

The dealership is now a home improvement store and I suspect the motel has been torn down as it was close to the state line and most of that has been redeveloped.

The last one is Shelby's ad in a Swedish expat paper.

Brett, can you please scan the newspaper ad a little larger?  I can't read most of it.

Great find, BTW.

Just a clip of the ad. I suspect it was placed by Shelby's managers and not himself.

Also the sign on the postcard is probably the second one. First it was just Sky Terrace, 2nd Carroll Shelby's Sky Terrace and 3rd was down at ground level - probably into a response by the city to clean up sign clutter in the view.

Thanks!

If that motel's "party room" could talk...

I'm curious, as we get up to that area on occasion, does anyone know what the actual street address was of Shelby's motel?  There are still a number of vintage motels in the area, as well as more modern ones.

I believe it was just south of Stateline Ave on Highway 50 or Lake Tahoe Ave.  I'm pretty sure it is long gone last I checked.  See below street view very near the motel site.

Thanks Cory,
I thought it was in that general area, but I will look closer next time I'm up there.  I think you're right about it being long gone, but that's a great location.  Cheers!

Last time I remember seeing it was in the mid-late 80s. There has been a lot of development in the past 20 years close to the stateline some of the older places still exist further west.

In 1968 I sold my Cobra..csx2192 & ‘67 gt500…0962 to by my first home in Tahoe. The Sky Terrace had quite a display of Carroll’s trophy’s. Also in the parking lot was his flat bottom boat. I actually raced it by chance in 1970 as I had a Sanger with a 427. Did win, but Carroll was not driving, and was lucky as I pulled a good start!

6s2055:  Very cool story!

Anyone have pix of CS in that boat?

The Sky Room was on US 50 between Ski Run Blvd. and Stateline. Believe the cross street was Wildwood & US 50. Wildwood and US 50 was subject to flooding with heavy rain and spring runoff from Heavenly Valley. During redevelopment believe the Sky Lounge and the restaurant next door, Two Guys From Italy were demolished and are now runoff/ retention ponds along with a memorial park for missing children. This was set up sometime later after Jacee Duggar’s was kidnapped who some 20+ years later was rescued.
Am getting senile but pretty sure this is all correct.
