1967 GT 350 Dash Emblem
« on: May 09, 2018, 05:19:47 AM »
Looking for an excellent condition original 1967 GT 350 dash emblem as the one I have hasn't weathered it's 50+ years particularly well. I think I can bring the chrome back on the one I have so if just the inserts were available I would consider that as well.

I don't know if there's a difference between early or later emblems as there are with so many other parts on these cars but this would be for an early car - 10/66.

Thanks -

Is the "chromed" base portion metal or plastic?  The originals were plastic, some of the early repro's were metal.

Yes, like a number of things on he '67's (I think your double-digit car fits this period) the earliest emblems were not embossed (see that neither of the two in the image are embossed on the dash/deck lid (the early cars did not get a grille emblem).   Also, very early cars the snake portion was not the full width of the inset area for the snake portion of the emblem to sit in.  (See attached).

For anyone wanting to geek out more about the details:

To add to JD's post the earliest dash and trunk plastic emblem surrounds were a smaller size compared to the later version . I think that when you see a emblem that is too small in the surround that it is during a transition to the larger size and ether by mistake or using up old stock the smaller emblems were used. Also all of the repro emblem surrounds were metal and not plastic like what was used in 67 production (early or late). This is one time when the aftermarket made something better (metal surround)then production IMO.

I have a pretty good feeling that I am going to need all the 67 GT 350 emblems for #45.

Not for sure as I have never dug through all the boxes since buying it in 1991, so guess it can't hurt to see if there are some nice repops that are correct?
Plastic, not metal, correct?

john

John, don't waste too much time. First off you are not going to find any that are exactly like the early ones used on that early of a car. The odds for finding a whole set of early style NOS  most likely approach powerball win statics. ;) The repops are all the later style version . Repops are all metal and not plastic like original which is hard to tell. The big problem that I see is that the color of the emblem is a different shade . Dramatic IMO on all of the ones I have seen. I can typically tell from 50 feet if it is a repop given the dramatic difference in shade.

Bob, I think you mean that Ca-Ca yellow background.  Yes, they might as well put a battery and light on that shade of yellow......

Here is an image of three fender emblems that illustrate the differences of color.  The one on the left is a faded original that is the embossed version, middle is a NOS of the same not faded.

The repro on the right is representative of a series that was available for a few years.  Note the Mustard color background (paint - not anodized), the SHELBY at the top is bigger, the snake is bigger, the GT350 lettering is slightly different and all the embossing is contoured differently.

These are visible from 50 feet, personally if you can't find "correct" one I'd use the old faded.  Of course if you are getting the car judged then you may need to use the repro's if you can't locate NOS or better repro's.

Bob,
I have bad luck anyway, so will not raise my hopes on a lottery win>>

Huge difference in the background color, and the size of the snake.
I hope that at least one pops up in the car or in the boxes.
The dash was never touched, so I think the dash cobra is still in tact.

JD, thanks for the pictures to show the real differences
