10-spoke spare stowage

Hi all,

I know this tends to be a hub-cap type of place. Mine are still tucked away in the attic until "that day", but for now - 10-spokes on the car...

My question is about stowing the spare (10-spoke). I have a wing-nut and washer, and am stowing the spare "face up" (with the jack positioned underneath as normal). However, I have also seen (and tried myself) the spare stowed face down, using the lug wrench as the hold-down - which is similar to what is shown on the spare-tire placard in the trunk. That way also gives me a little more space, as I can stow a few tools and things in the "dish" at the rear of the wheel.

It may not be important, but I get a little bit of pleasure about things being "right" (no comments about the lack of "rightness" go 10-spokes in the first place please... ;) )

Store the tenspoke spare valve stem up. You will need to use the 68 Mustang styled steel wheel mounting washer.  Mount in this order. Jack and handle under side, wheel face up with styled steel wheel washer held down with the wing nut.

I understand what you are wanting to do. I used 10 spokes but used an original KH steel wheel in the trunk like the factory did. So you definitely don't want the steel wheel look in the trunk?

If I get a flat I call AAA. I do have the correct bag of nuts for my space savor in my vert thanks to Ed.

I decided to go with the "matching spare" approach. I don't know that this car will ever get "judged" (aside from by me), but as I understand, *if* a car had come with 10-spokes from the factory (I know there were few if any...), then it would have had five matching wheels, and if the 10-spokes were "dealer-added", it would have had four 10-spokes and a steel wheel spare. But that was based on my memory of internet reading from 20 years ago (when I fitted the 10-spokes), so willing to be corrected there...

As an aside, I actually fitted a different size tire on my spare wheel anyway (a P195/60R-15, rather than the P225/60R-15s) so it would fit properly, so it technically doesn't match anyway...

I do believe that is outdated information. You are not going to find a "dealer" added ten spoke car. The few invoices I have seen were so obviously faked it was laughable. Very few cars actually had factory ten spokes its really a non discussion. (Less than 12)

To the best of my knowledge, current judging takes a deduction for ten spoke wheels. Maybe the 1968 judges can clarify.

As the current 68 Shelby head judge I was asked to review the judging sheets ( 1968 Shelby ) and suggest any changes. One item I requested to be changed was to not allow ten-spokes and or only with documentation as only a hand full of 68 Shelby's ever received these wheels from the factory. As stated it is what I requested, will it be changed? Probably but I haven't heard one way or another as of now.

Yes I have and will continue to deduct for ten-spokes. The last judging sheet I have does not say no ten spokes but it does specify 15 x 6 semi gloss steel wheels. I just wanted that no ten-spokes with out documentation clause as someone might try and make an argument for the ten-spokes as a few ( very few ) cars did get them.

We have always required reasonable proof for out of the ordinary circumstances . Reasonable being the key word. This goes for other things too . No need to call out every obscure possibility. The burden of reasonable proof has been with the entrant for his or her specific car. Just because something was done on one of the few ten spoke cars doesn't mean it is automatically correct for another. Of course the powers to be could change that but I don't think they should IMO.

Since we are talking 68s what I have seen too much of lately are claims that "many dealers"(current KR auction on BaT) installed top stripes. Another is many dealers installed 10 spokes when new. Then we get to the dealers installing Paxtons.....So I have never seen a car documented as such for any of these but I am NOT a judge so my experience is limited. Has anyone here reading this seen documentation of any of these things being added on a brand new 68 Shelby at delivery?

Thanks for giving your time to take on this role Rodney. Is there an avenue for one to get 68 Shelby judging sheets(or 69-70s)? SAAC or MCA? I assume you are the SAAC head judge? Gary
