Already some interesting commentary. And a large bid within 10 minutes of the start of the auction.

“The car does not have a title, as it is registered in a state that does not issue titles for a vehicle of its age. It is being sold on its Connecticut registration.”

Problem???

Depends on the state. • The last issued out-of-state title. When an out-of-state title is not surrendered to the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV), the California registration card is marked “Nontransferable” and a California Certificate of Title is not issued. They also won't register the car if the current person on the registration isn't the person registering it in CA.
A guy I knew came from NY his VW didn't have a title. When he sold it he was required to post a bond (for 5 years) for the value of the car incase a bank or other owner showed up. CA could care less about where it came from without a title or MSO they won't issue a title.

You will not get a title in your name to this car in many states.

What an insane bid for a car that’s been totaled. Fenders, 1/4’s and floors to start with. That’s ok for a race car but would scare away your average buyer of a vehicle like this one.

Agreed Bigfoot, way too much baggage, as some of us have discussed on these pages before, but apparently some don't care about originality these days.  The surprising thing is that it is not sold.  Must be family nostalgia.

Even a very very nice example should have a reserve around there……..

I can only imagine how bad the car was given the heavy rust pitting on the rear axle.

C'mon.  This was not an insane bid, it was more then likely just a case of shill bidding.  The seller lists his car for $99 with a $180k reserve and has his buddy bid it up to $179k hoping that a fish will bid $180k on it.  Unfortunately there is no fish out there so the car doesn't sell and it only cost $99 bucks to list it.   The $179k "bidder" doesn't need to follow through and in the end, he isn't out one cent.  Gimme a break.  It happens all the time at Mecum and other auction sites out there.

Okay, since you asked 😉

I understand my opinion means diddly squat and there are people that have a lot more disposable income than I can personally relate to.

I think the seller unknowingly open a can of worms by disclosing the prior accident and rust repairs. Its a dilemma many sellers have struggled with. This was compounded by the fact there was only one owner, so they couldn't claim ignorance .

Having said all that, I dont think the auction was manipulated based on other BaT activity. I agree about the rear axle housing being a pretty good tell of previous condition. The 179k bid was more than fair in my estimation. Although its hard to evaluate workmanship and repair work from the photos.

The blue KR and the green one coming should be interesting and give us some more context.

One other note, I refuse to fall into the trap of arguing with those on that site who dont have the best interests of the marque in mind. They instead want to make uninformed comments about certain years being "better" than others.

I stopped punching out of the heavy weight class years ago and they can squabble amongst themselves.
