Possible Way to Track Down Past License Plates

I stumbled upon an interesting item today.  This was on my father's keychain on his brand new Mercury Montego back in 1973 (what a POS that was).  Although this was in New York, I'm sure other states must have done the same thing. 











On the reverse side you can see it was provided by the Disabled American Veterans of Cincinnati, Ohio.  It had a Postage Guaranteed feature that if it were lost, it could be dropped into any US mailbox and returned free of charge.  But in order for this to work, I'm sure the Veterans Association would have had a master list of owner's and corresponding plates.  It's worth looking into in order to track down some previous owners

I recall my parents having DAV return mail key ring license plates. Don't remember if they were sent annually or not and I'm sure it included a donation request.

I have a bunch of CA ones from cars my parents owned. They always came with a donation pitch. Wouldn't work today as DMVs don't give out info as easily as they did in the 50s and 60s. I doubt you could track any of them down since the records probably went in the dumpster when they went to computers. CA has no records back that far anymore.

I grew up in CA, and have some of those keyring tags for my parents' cars.  I don't recall our ever receiving them for any cars after about 1974. Maybe it was different in other states.

Agreed that the old Disabled American Veterans records are probably long gone, but it might still worth the search for the potential lost goldmine.

We had those key tags here in the province of Ontario, Canada. also to do with the veterans association. still have a bunch of them around.
One unfortunate thing with veterans here, in Canada, the legions are shutting down, not many left from WW11, Korea. I read that the more recent veterans are not interested in these meeting places.

I had a 72 Charger red with white vinyl top. Amazing how many people called it a S&H car.
