Don't forget Henry Ford lost his first two car companies. The first just died the second became Cadillac. He started the current Ford with 28 investors and ended up buying them out when he wanted to put money back into the company but the investors sued him for dividends. That created the Ford family stock that controls the company today.
Henry got really rich and I'd consider the 25 million that the Dodge Brothers got or the 30 million that Couzens got in the 1920s to have made them really rich.
The Tesla guys forgot the first rule - neither of them retained enough Tesla stock to achieve billionaire status

Brett:  Maybe they wanted to get away from Musk, and sold their stock as a "f him, I'm out of here" type thing.

Not a smart long-term financial move, but I can understand that sort of motivation.
