How much tire can you squeeze into a 65 wheel well
« on: February 19, 2022, 08:22:48 PM »
I was looking at 245-60 15 tires and see that Hoosier sells the R7 in a 50 series which would help to prevent the diameter from getting out of hand as the width goes up. I know it's not a street legal tire but I doubt that I'd ever get ticketed for that minor detail so has anybody had experience with this tire? has anybody tried to shove that much into the 65 wheel well?

A 245/60/15 will fit easily all around if you have rims that have the ideal backspace. I just did an 66 with 245/40/17 all arround and there were no problems. But its all about the measurements before and the right rims and sometimes you need to work with distance spacers between wheel and axles.

mlplunkett,

The Avon CR6ZZ tire in 245/60-15 would be a better choice for a street driven car. The R7, while a "sticky" tire, takes several minutes to even come up to optimum temperature on a race track. The R7 does not do well in temperatures below 40 degrees and in damp to wet conditions have less than ideal adhesion. Plus, you'd be lucky to get 400 miles on a street driven set.

      mlplunkett,

I have, for the past 10 years, been using PS ENG. wheels, 15" x 8" with AVON 225x65R15's on all 4 corners. I
believe, this is about, as big, a tire/wheel combo, that will fit 65/66-wheel wells. My fenders, are rolled, as that
is what I prefer. It is close, but no rubbing.

I too run a set of PS Engineering one piece T/A wheels in 15x8 with a 4 3/8” back spacing as suggested by Phil Schmidt. I currently run them with an old set of Goodyear Eagle Gatorbacks in 225/60-15 on all 4 corners. I’ll be changing them soon to 225/60 fronts and 245/60 rears. The rear wheels/fenders have plenty of clearance to accommodate the 245/60’s.

My car has 225/60 Avons on all corners, fenders are rolled. All fit without problems. I have also two 245 Avons, also on American Racing wheels, they do fit, but the car is quite low in the back and there would be rubbing when cornering. I have to fit the new springs - i think the rear ones are lower than they should. Maybe the tires might fit better then.

What tire brand are you finding that offer a 40 series tire in a 15" wheel?

When I go to the Avon site it tells me the CR6ZZ is not available in this country. Tir Rack doesn't carry them. I can only find them on a UK web site. Where can I order them?
