Cracked KH Brake Drum
« on: January 27, 2023, 08:36:52 AM »
I have this original KH brake drum. During the course of my annual check and cleaning of the brake system, I noticed this hairline crack [see photo]. There was no issue in braking, but I felt prudent to remove it and replace both drums with some American made racing drums from Cobra Automotive.

OK, me question is can this drum be repaired??? If not, does anyone have an extra, just 1 that they might turn loose of??? My car is an early 66 model [406].

Thanks for looking,

Steve

When considering the material at hand, the environment of function, not to mention the safety factor, particularly should the repair attempt prove unsound when put back into service,  I would not feel that there is truly a "good" repair process available.   :)

I would not call that a Hairline Crack.  I call that a Scrap Crack.  Scrap it and find a better one, safety is more important than that Drum.

I remember hearing that drums could be re-sleeved, like an engine cylinder.

Looks like this place does them?  https://www.jgrelining.com/

Thanks all. I have reached out to Jesse and he is going to assist me. Probably sourcing one that he has extras of. He knows of JG Relining but I would prefer a refinished one.

Again, this site has proved invaluable and thanks to all who offered assistance.

All the best,

Yes, but just like a cylinder in an engine block a sleeve won't fix any and all failures!   :o
