1967 shelby Axles , ID Help
« on: March 21, 2023, 07:42:30 PM »
I believe these are the correct original axles for 67 GT500 and 66-67 Fairlane 427 ,
but can someone confirm what other applications they are correct for.?

Are they correct for 67 GT350? are they correct for 68 GT350 and / or 68 GT500?
These have the unique semi circle casting design on the ends and have the quarter hash marks.
Measure 27 1/8" and 31 1/8"

I plan on listing them for sale soon and wanted to list them as accurate as possible.
Thank you

They look the same as the 31 spline axles used in 1968 to me. Typically found in GT500 / GT500KR / 428CJ Mustangs and GT-E Cougars. One of yours shows a date code of 8A. I suspect that's January 1968.

Sure if those had 31 spline axles they would use them too. Never had one or worked on one so I don't know.

Not "if", all 1968 Shelbys, including 350s had the 31 splines 😉

If you say so - I've only seen the ones with a big block. Never owned or touched one with a 302.

You dont have to believe me, check out the build sheets and the MPC.

The 1968 GT350s used one of two axles the 3.50:1/WES-U : 31 spline

and the 3.89:1/C8ZX-A  : 31 spline

Ironically it was the lowest horsepower of all year GT 350s that had 31. All others 28

Thank you so much for all of the information on my axles.

Based on your replies ,
Since the axles dont have the white paint code inside the holes and as Royce stated the 8A is probably a date code,
It looks like my axles are most likely from  68 shelby 350/500 , 68 428CJ Mustang or 68 GT-E Cougar.
Also,  that this certain style end casting  were also used on 66-67 Fairlane 427 and 67 Shelby as well (at this length).

One thing I have noticed for whats its worth,
I have owned another set of these in the past and have pics of 2 other sets from a friend, and in all 4 sets when comparing their ends , one axle end is cast very clean/crisp with the hash marks visable ,and the end on the other axle, the casting is much more crude, and thats the side that usually has the numbers ,

or at least in the sets ive seen.

BossBill’s picture of his axle is a 28 spline and out of a ‘67 GT350. So not really relevant to this 31 spline ID thread, other than proves ‘67s 350s had 28 spline which most already knew.
I would be a little hesitant to say the 8A is a date code because they seem to have many various forging numbers.
First photo is from ‘67 GT 500 #591.  Next two are a set I have here at the shop. Fourth photo I don’t recall who sent it to me but have a picture of it’s mate.

Thank you Dragpack,!
All information is good.
Maybe other members will post pics of their axles as well to help dial in some more facts.
It looks like i see some white paint on yours too.

I was aware the axle end with the square opening that bossbill posted is 28 spline,

Here is the MPC listing for ‘67 Fairlane and ‘68 Fairlane/Mustang 31 spline axles prior to the C9OZ-C, -D axles came out and replaced them all.  The second picture is from a Ford MCRL and interestingly shows the C7OZ-E, -F ‘68 Fairlane/Mustang axles with a C8OW engineering numbers.
