Tire Size Recommendation 66 Hertz
« on: May 23, 2023, 06:11:34 PM »
I'm looking for a tire size recommendation for my '66 Hertz.  I'll be utilizing the correct 14" magnum wheels (3.375" backspacing) and the A-arms have been lowered 2".  What's currently on there now are factory Ford chrome magnums with P195/70R14 tires.  The overall width of the rims is 8" so I'm thinking these are probably 6" rims.  The backspacing is 4-1/4".  How much tire can I comfortably use without issue considering the wheel will be outwards almost an inch.  Thanks very much!

I put repop firestone D70-14 on my gt350 (factory 10 spoke car) the blue streak 14/695 looks way to skinny. The D70's fit the wheel opening perfect.

I think you meant blue streak.

I was trying to cut and paste the tire listing to show the size - it's listed as blue dot / blue streak - it would not cut and paste, I fixed it.

There is no metric conversion that is exact but here are the specs:

Width 6.21
Cross section 7.85
Outer diameter 25.32

I hate radials on restored classic cars. The bias ply tires today are soft rubber and stay black vs the recycled radial rubber that turns brown.

Assuming that you want to use a radial tire, you will probably want to use a 205/70 x 14.

I have been running that size on a '66 driver which I have driven over 10K in the past several years.

Honestly, I am considering going with a 215/70, but with the lowered front end on your car, you may experience some front fender interference with this size. It is about 1/2" taller than the 205/70.

Here is a picture, although keep in mind that my trunk is heavily loaded here, so the car is a bit lower in the rear in this particular image.

Thanks, Brant!  That's exactly the size I was considering.  I think it's a very good choice with much less chance of any interference.  Thanks for the picture of your car.  Lookin' GREAT!

I have thee 215 size on my 66 with no REAL issues, (very slight rub while backing up tight turn) Stock height, A arms have NOT been done yet even though they were to be done....(Go figure). And my wheels are the crap repro magnums....

I was thinking these, worried about the size though, but at least they have a nice lettering and are a radial.

I have these tires on my 66.  They're tall tires.  Probably will rub with a shelby drop.

On mine are 205 60R 15 front and 215 60R 15 in rear.  No rubbing issues on front with the Shelby A arm drop included.

Eh, the tires are Kumho and are a tad old.  I got them on the fast and cheap just to get the car on the road again. I will need a new set quite soon. Not sure what would look best on 15 x 7 torques.
