Well we just started doing some maintenance to our recently aquired GTH.  Replaced a broken stud in the front rotor,  replaced the brake pads, master cylinder, rear shoes, rebuilt the wheel cylinders, completely drained all the brake fluid etc.

Funny after all these years just how original this car is with its FoMoCo parts.

Redoing the parking brake assembly to concours correct....

Oh well unto the roads

Aloha

Fellow GT350 owners, as I labor on this fantastic sun shiny Florida day may I provide you with some words of wisdom :

If you are a DIY

What part numbers do I order for my brakes ?

Rear shoes you pick brand Raybestos Bendix Wagner # 169 cost -/+ $28

Front pads Bendix SBC 11

cost -/+ $ 19

Beats buying them from the "specialty shops" at sometimes double those prices

I reused the original ( repacked) bearings and seals

Also pick up some new bleeder ( $1.25 ) screws for your calipers,  our left front was stuck. But we unstuck it....

not only that they where having a close out sale on front and rear studs at 59 cents each. Took their last boxes......sold, sold, sold !

Well good afternoon boys and girls

We have been almost through the entire brake system on the old 66, so what was fixed, repaired or replaced ?

The car kinda sorta stopped in it's on way and on its owns terms.....

First off and I do mean OFF, the front metallic brake pads and rear metallic shoes.

What a terrible idea to put this on a street passenger  vehicle.  Even if you take it to the track ( yeah that once or twice per year trip ) to me it is just not worth it on the street.

No more feeling of when is this car going or is it going to STOP !

No longer need to :

"get the brakes to operational temperatures" or go to the GYM to do legs seven days a week

They are ready hot or cold thanks to good old regular pads and shoes

When we took the rear brakes drums off to service the brakes we found that on the drivers side rear drum "someone" previously forgot to re install the parking brake link "NO BUENO !"

We replaced the master cylinder with the "correct" original type.

What a much needed pedal improvement.

Next on to the emergency brake system, it was missing numerous parts, parts where rusted or stuck, completely set up in correctly.

But through the magic of the internet and numerous friends and acquaintances just like that SHAZAM they either gave or sold to us the much needed parts to make this car more safely operable.

In conclusion, it  now stops like it should.

Gone is that queasy feeling when you once upon a time pressed on the brakes and it would continue to go.....

The End

P. S. It will never be "The End" as this is and will continue to be an old heap money pit, needing continuous maintenance .... but we enjoy the suffering,  keep smiling !   :)

I wouldn't exactly characterize said car as a "heap" or a "money pit."  "Rolling artwork" better characterizes the Shelby Mustang.  What else would one spend one's money on?  Shoes?  Designer purses?  A new deck to cook hotdogs on a grill?

Don't forget that special note about the brakes in the owners manual.  Has anyone followed the instructions to run your car to 60 mph and use a full pressure stop to set the brakes?  I wonder how many rentals did that as well. 8)

Aloha Don

We replaced the metallic brake linings front and rear with regular material.  We no longer have to heat up to brake decently

As far as this many rentals did that, I would guess ZERO

that's why they would freak out and go back rent a impala.. .

Today we declared national Petronix Day

We cracked the distributor open and took out the dual points.  Installed the good old petronix one.

Now the car sees the key coming towards it and starts itself.

Smoother running and idling. Acceleration response is very crisp. Noticed that the gas burns much better out the exhaust pipes, less fuel smell.

This was noticed by my better half

If you are running dual points,  consider this ignition system it works very well.

Until the next adventure, keep driving them !

P. S. I do not worked for petronix nor did they give this kit to me for free

Trickle charged my battery again today.  Next charge will be before I fire the old girl up for the season in April.

Have been running a pertronix unit in my car for 19 years.  No issues so far.
