Just so you know, that is a 1968 knob. 1968 knobs have a flat top 3. 1969 knobs have a round top 3.

I agree but nobody I know including me has ever found a cutoff date approx for when the first rounded 3 showed up then they went to the second iteration(darker) of the round 3 in Jan of 69.  I have not seen any early original 69 cars or very late 68 cars to see a variance. Since to most the knobs are the "same" and I'd think Ford wouldn't just do a hard  cut off on a knob like this from one year to the next but am also thinking a supplier thing? Different supplier just making it different. It is a mystery. I have had a June 68 built KR with the flat 3 knob (I bought the very used knob off a guy who replaced his original one with a NOS one). BTW I used to collect the knobs even buying some very early repo knobs that matched the early 68 knobs(no line cut indention around the ball). Chris Simon used to have the most NOS knobs I have ever seen and he educated me on knobs(Chris owns a LOT of 68.5 cars or used to) back in the 2000s.

Do you have a side photo of the knob? No slashes or numbers on the bottom I'm wondering if it is a very early 68.

There has never been a part # engraved on the nos knobs I have owned. My friend has a early 69 mach that has this knob. Only the ford box ever had the part # listed. I have had 4 of these 2 in the orig box.

My guess is that if you own a car before July this would work fine. If a later car then that someone has to prove the rounded 3 was correct for there car. With no proof then it will be listed as a 68-69 knob.

See this one here? It has no number on the bottom or slashes. It also doesn't have the ring around it. To me this is a very early knob for 68. https://www.ebay.com/itm/386711695974?hash=item5a09d03266:g:qeoAAOSwiBlls9jd&amdata=enc%3AAQAIAAAA8HVRyM5eSgTezDkOg6ncCVggAqARDmu8pS6a%2F%2FdNETKdd0m0gtdpQjeQ22mQETu%2BL0saXXJPpw4kA6dRTTE8TgOQfi6szXFE9hdA%2FTDmpvynvB30ICUbx7Rxk2avmsBc%2BxKbJfzwJVBHOtXdtuj4pvNquIXrcSPx%2BtF04LW7gru3gAZNkAjXRZR%2BQ0R%2FGY%2FnbZW6jI%2F9nKBjhD%2FCaq18FhxC72tBbvlDyfJ%2FiUNNvYMdf5HYzx04WDfT1byvFofFh6Et7cDzxlFaPKgUD6%2B9QStC0zHRXbHJdi6OERABjUWfblqtlRs%2Fj1SKVaU3U4UQyA%3D%3D%7Ctkp%3ABk9SR5aR9_ytYw

This pic is of an early 68 knob without the ring(groove),. It has no numbers or slashes on the bottom. Chris once told me early carts got this type of knob. Now the numbers on the bottom is NOT a part number but a single number clocked with 3 slashes like a 1 or a 2 at 12,3,6,and 9 positions. I'm trying to find a pic to show the bottom of the later knobs not like your knob. The one in the topic link is the later 68 style with the groove. https://www.saacforum.com/index.php?topic=5280.msg45103#msg45103

Perkins has this one on Ebay. More times than not you see the slashes on them(raised) and this one has the number 2 on it. It also has the Galaxie pattern and could be a  service iteration. I'm posting just to show you some have a number on the bottom. Does your knob have the groove in it?  To be clear the most common ones I have found for production era 68-69 have the groove in them and a number on the bottom. I got about 5-6 with at least 1 NOS and one like new. No pics at work on my CPU to show of mine. While only a couple of part numbers were used there were iterations going on right into the 90s when the last iteration had a silver and not chrome ring which is the one Scott Drake repoed. Part went obsolete IIRC in the 90s.

No number at all on the bottom, here is the side view.

Thanks as you got the early style but then again I cannot say how long that lasted or 2 suppliers or whatnot. It is a nice correct rare piece definitely priced right. I've seen them at one time pop 900 but have pulled back since then. I'll never understand seeing a 150-200K plus  68 Shelby wearing a 34 dollar POS Scott Drake shift knob.
