The Bullitt car has a 120 mph speedometer. It's highly unlikely the tach was changed out but not the speedometer. But like they say. Anything is possible.
Having a factory tach did not mean the car came with a 140MPH speedo if that is what is being inferred.  Two of my 68.5 CJ fastbacks came with a factory 120 MPH (both with trip) and an 8K tach.  On another of my 68.5 CJ cars, the marti report says "tach with trip speedo" but does not specify which tach, or which speedo.  My other martis do not have this noted, but I know the cars came so equiped.

What I was trying to imply is if the bullitt cars tach was changed (which I personally don't believe), it probably would have been easier to get a whole dashboard from a Shelby since the car has a deluxe interior rather than taking the dash in the car apart to change the tach. The fact the 120 speedometer is still there would suggest the tach is original to the car. This is my opinion and my opinion only. I do not wish to get into an argument if someone has a different opinion than me.  My 68 1\2 also has the 120 trip Speedo & 8000 no redline tach. It is not original to my car but it did come from a 4 speed 68 1/2.

No argument- just a point.  My CJ's also did not have the red line....Cheers!

Why change anything on it at all except what the camera would see? It was just a prop for the movie.

Racing it through the streets of San Francisco is not the same as prepping it for competition.

It could hardly go around a corner and the Charger driver had to keep waiting for Mcqueen to catch up.

They intended to wreck it so why bother with little details like a tach?

My point exactly! That's why I believe the dash is original and obviously some 390s had 8000 rpm tachometers.

The cars were special ordered right? That may be the reason. 428 CJ 4spd Mustangs had a 120 speedo with 8K tach . Tach was optional on the  auto trans cars. My R code 4 spd has the 120/8K combination.
